A friend of mine goes to Upenn and did this as his senior design project I think it counts as an other mod

RAVI-Bot (Robotic Audio Vehicle for Improvisation) is an electromechanical system that mimics the playing techniques and improvisational style of the North Indian Hindustani classical stringed instrument, the sitar. The RAVI-Bot consists of distinct components including solenoid actuated mechanical fingers, optically encoded DC motors for string plucking and bending, and a control circuit consisting of a microcontroller and the drive circuitry.
