CD-Rom Window...

Yeah, it's alla part, and the lines are marked, but I'm actually sitting at my desk, and I'm trying to figure out a way to cut without cutting a hole in something...important, if at all possible. Anyone done this before and got any suggestions?

Yea, Ive done it. What cdrom do you have? The make will determine what you have to do.

You have the top cover off and seperate right?

The main thing you need to look for is how the center CD hold down device is constructed.

Some have a small disc type gizmo built into the top cover itself, which you have incorperate into your design and cut around it.

Others have the hold down device set-up internally, in which case you can pretty much cut the cover any way you choose.

Hope that made sense...lol...I'm sure the gizmo has a proper name, but I'm clueless.

Yes, that's all fine and good, but my sound muffling headphone are at in my dorm room, and this is really loud. I've never cut for very long without somthing to muffle the shreiking. I think I'll go get those head phones now...

kayin, are you just gonna cut it, and leave it open or are you going to put plexi in there too. I witnessed Digital-World do that same mod for a PC at the store we were working at. if you have the room in the drive put either a tri-LED or a 4" cathode in there. looks uber-pimp...

Make sure you cut the hole out smaller than the size of the cd. You want to see just the cd not the interior.
With the internal bridge. It will make cutting the top easier. Just the hole. You can cut the bridge down but thats up to you. make sure you paint the bridge flat black.

Thanks. The window is cut, and I'm cut too. it had way too many sharp points. But, I think the wave swirl design will R0X0R when it's painted.

He's currently enlarging the design. It now takes up the majority of the cover. There will now have to be work done to the bridge, as to not kill the design.

I'm not sure it's a good idea. However, with a few LEDs and a paint job, it might work.

Rust thanks for the props!! He's right use a tri led or a 4" cathode. Looks pimp. Mine was a larger cut out then Ducks. However its a matter of preference. Heres the pics.

Nice... The windows have been cut, and we all get to breath metal dust.

I either need an air filter or a breath mask... mabey both. Probably both.

If we had a digital camera, we'd send a picture.

done it on 2 of my drives, both turn out fine. the biggest problem is mounting the plexi. on one i used bolts, so i had to cut away at the frame to get the top to close.

I got a free drive, but it has no top cover at all, so i have to make one.

that should be fun.
