Default psu mod

well not exactly a mod,
but i noticed that alot fo people use the arcrylic psu mods. and i was wondering if it would kill me if if i just took the psu cover off and let it run like that for a while. i was also thinking about cutting a big hole in the bottom of it to put in a nice big fan.
what do you guys think?

It wouldn't kill you to run it like that, (cover off) but It'd be highly dangerous...like running a monitor without the case on...one slip could mean an early checkout for you, or at least a trip to the hospital...as far as modding it with a BAF (big ass fan) you could do that, but why not just get a quality PSU with dual fans already installed?

NOT RECOMMENDED! DO NOT RUN WITH COVER OFF! A bigass fan would not fit in most PSUs due to their thesign. a 92mm is what would best fit. The only PSU that I know of that can and does have a 120mm in it is the Aurora 350watt PSU.

The cover for the power supply provides very necessary EMI shielding. I've actually seen one instance where a computer kept bluescreening until the cover was put back on the power supply. In all probability, yours would probably work if you ran it without the cover on but generally speaking it's a good idea to leave it on in case you accidentally touch one of the capacitors in the wrong way causing it to discharge.

And by the way, that would hurt.

I'm done hiding, man. 40 hour work weeks plus 16 credit hours at the school has just killed my free time. But that's all OK, we're leaving for QuakeCon tomorrow and it's going to kick ass.

My friend Christina Mahoney has ran hundreds of PSUs(from a little 3w DC/DC converter, to a huge 1000w audio amp PSU) without covers, and she never got shocked.
She designs PSUs very often, though.
I have opened lots of PSUs, but I ran only a few without a cover.

I understand that you want cooling and it does kinda look cool with the cover off, but you can only cool something so much before it is just moving air. and not taking away heat ( i realize that the way i expressed that last statement may leave concern as to if i know what i am talking about, but you know what i am saying). remember you can only cool to ambient anyway unless you are doing peltier or some other EXTREME
cooling. why dont you do some airbrushing on the side or polish the thing. as for cutting a hole in it go for it! hell put a UV reactive cathode fan in the thing, that'll be cool. i did a green one for dROCK once. it has a nice effect. but if you want the cover off. take the thing off. you only have to live with the results.
