I'm assuming your talking about an ATX PSU. Easy done, green wire connected to any black wire via paperclip or wire, then flip on switch on back of PSU.

Just don't switch it on without a load. Plug a fan into a molex connector or something.

Well for one they generally wont come on unless there is a load present.. if there is a damage causing reason I am not aware of it...

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified that first. Most voltage regulators require a minimum load, otherwise they can self-oscilate. I think the majority of power supplies have a minimum load resistor in them, but since we're "using the product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling" it's always better to be safe than sorry.

"Just don't switch it on without a load. Plug a fan into a molex connector or something."
From http://repairfaq.org/sam/smpsfaq.htm :
"CAUTION: I have seen one case where an ATX supply actually blew up without a load using this "hot wire" technique. I don't know if there was already a problem with the unit or it really absolutely required a load. But almost immediately after grounding the green wire, multiple electrolytic caps on the secondary side exploded and spilled their guts, one of the MOSFETS shorted, and then the power fuse blew. It may be that the designers of this supply in their infinite wisdom assumed that since power is enabled via the mainboard, there would never be a circumstance where there wouldn't be at this that as a load!"

so what would happen if you did switch it on without a load? because i did that and it was on for a few seconds and then just stoped working. did it die?

Some PSUs would work without a load, others simply go pop and burn out.
I find that a 5 ohm, 10w resistor on the 5v line is enough load to allow an ATX PSU to work.
