Just get an 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter plug.

um, yeah, i treid doin all that (i am adapter kind and had 4 on hand) but a guitar has an unamplified signal, its inaudible without a preamp... but i ttried usin one, it totaly blew my sound card, and i got off lucky (it was integrated) because after a few dars with the comp off it started workin again.. scary stuff seeyin as how i had just built my first system and was broke (imagine goin wit out a mobo, not easy)

That's your problem, the sound card. Let me do some checking, but I believe most separate "good" sound cards provide around 4W of amplification.

i usualy have no problems hooking any of my guitars up to my computer, through the back line in or the front ine in 2 on my live drive.
i usualy hook my guitar into my amp then run the line out to the line in on my pc, because the pc gives you a really bad tone sometimes. but you youll probably just need a 1/4'' to 1/8 inch.
i really dont do much with music on this computer. i use my computer in my studio for everything. and that has a big soundboard hooked up to it through midi so i really dont need to use an adapter anymore.

Hercules makes kickass cards. I also rememeber seeing a audiocard with a 40watt preamp out, but I dont know where. My Live! External has a 20watt preamp out via RCA plugs. Just search around buddy.

for what its worth, if u're still looking for a solution, there's a thing called GuitarPort, made by Line 6, that u can use to hook up your guitar to the computer, does some amp modeling and all that, i haven't used it personall, but it looks promising, cost about as much as some effects pedals out there
search for it on www.musiciansfriend.com
