Default Jornada 680 screen...

Evening all!

Ive got an HP Jornada 680 sitting in my drawer just collecting dust. Its on of those handheld PC things with full keyboard etc that never really caught on.

Dont use it any more as its just a bit crappy! One of those impulse eBays that just didnt live up to the dream!

This thing has a pretty nice 16cm widescreen 65k colour touch screenwhich is just begging to be ripped out and put on my coputer... somehow...

Anyone know if this might be possile? If the touch screen would still work? (That would be sweet!) or anything like that... ive searched the net for some schematics or something like that but havnt had any luck.

Nerdz, thinking this might be up your street if you read (Oh... and i dont know if you remember you gave me a hand designing an LED array thingy a while back... just waiting to borrow a mates camera and i'll show you how it came out... not too shabby! )

...might be on disassembling the WHOLE journada to use the touchscreen. Maybe use the modem, the PCMCIA slot or a keyboard hack to interface it to a SINGLE function in your computer [The voice memo thing sounds usable to me - I carried a dedicated device for that fuction a few years ago].

Good luck!

wow, what year is that from? CE 3.1 was a while back. and no CF slot so i guess it really is useless (otherwise you could have a fun mp3 player)
the screen will be proprietary as hell so i doubt you would find a controller for it or if you do they can get kind of pricey. software is the other issue since i dont know of a color graphic display suite and the other option being industrial control stuff or embedded system evalutation kits.
what you can do is take it apart an look for part numbers on the LCD so you can find some specs but if it's hard to open (snap together) you better be commited to destroying it. unless it doesnt boot or has a dead battery then you cant lose.

Im still trying to figure that out myself. I got one of those palm pilot RTRN advertised, took it apart and it had the same thing. It had part numbers but came up with no luck. It had about 30 pins, and an extra 4 for the resistive touch panel.

Now 30 pins is alot, if you subtract 2 power pins you have 28 data lines. But most LCDs have an enable and something else, so subtract 2 more, that leaves 26 Data Lines (My counting could be off since the pins are so small, one time I got 29, then 27 then 30, but 27 is a prime number so it cant be divided by 2, nor could 27, so its probably 26 or 30)

Im sure you need some kind of controller chip to make it work, since its handheld it probably ran on 3 or 5V. I dont know what chip you would use though.

EDIT: give me a second to look through my mouser catalog, Im sure they must have something. Be warned if you do build this you will have to use SMD (surface mount soldering)

Not sure when it was from but my guess is "some time in the long ago... in the way back when". Bought it off eBay a while back for bout £50. It has got CF hidden sneakily in the bottom of the unit (which was a bonus as it was advertised without!)

Ill see if i can take the beast apart without too much damage. I doubt i would get much of a return for it on eBay so im not too fussed bout rendering it an ex-working machine.

So there's no way this thing could be hooked up to parallel ports or anything like that? Sure ive heard of people using random screens and just hard wiring them into the printer ports... hmmmm.... the search goes on!

Well I think what I meant to say was that the 2 cant be divided evenly into2, since there are 2 rows of connectors. Theres no way you could have 1/2 a connector.

I cant find any more info, than that link I did find this:
http://www.eio.com/datashet.htm

Look around there, good luck, because I have been searching for the same. Im keeping mine however, since its a possiblity in the future I could use it for say, an Mp3 player. ive read (and noticed) that all manufactors follow a standard. If you can find a data sheet with a pinout that it ALMOST like your LCD, well Im sure something could be designed around it.

Look at the character LCD modules, the pinout stays the same from manufactors to manufactor.

Well... Mr Jornada 680 had a meeting last night... with Mr Screwdriver... It wasnt a pretty meeting as Mr Screwdriver was somewhat unforgiving and proceeded to take Mr Jornada apart into several pieces! hehe

(its ok though... i tested the machine and it was screwed. The internal storage was messed up or something like that so it was either arrange the meeting with Mr Screwdriver... or with Mr Bin...)

SO... on to the actual point of this message... The screen is a Hiyachi SX16H003. Not in production any more. Found a data sheet for it but im writing from a different computer so havnt got links / pics at the moment. By eye there are about 30-40ish connectors on a strip connector. bout 4 are for a lit led button that was on the unit and another 8 or so are for the touch screen feature which i guess would be impossible to hook up.

Well if that means anything to anyone who knows anything then i would be interested to hear.

Thanks Pimps

Mark
