Default mounting expansion cards sideways: possible?

is it possible to mount PCI (or PCI-e) expansion cards sideways? for example, take a look at this picture of the Gateway Profile 5.5 (http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardw...eviews/5677/2/). It looks like one of the expansion cards is mounted sideways (i may be wrong about this). I also remember seeing something interesting in my teachers computer a couple of years ago. It was an expansion card that plugged into a PCI slot, on an ATX mobo in a tower case, and had several more PCI slots on it. I never did get around to asking him what the heck it was, and I was wondering if anyone here knows what i'm talking about.

There are adapters that will let you mount cards sideways. They are mostly for small form factor or other special purpose cases.
