well, i was wondering 2 things for a long time... first, is it at all possible to have more than 2 IDE HHd's hooked up? cause i have an 80Gig and 2 160Gig HDD's i want hooked up, and second, how would i have external cathodes, as to power them.

yes to more hd's its very possable you just hook up more via ribbon cables. i think, though am not sure, ied can have up to 4, scuzy can have loads of them.

for cathodes outside your case you can buy extrenal cathodes that run off usb or you could just run some wires outside you case, it wouldn't be hard at all.

Yes, you can run up to four IDE drives. As far as the second question goes, I don't really understand. Cathodes are powered by the 12V rail off the power supply.

i think i rember seeing a power supply that was made for pluging into your wall then you could just plug watever you had with a molex connector into it(didnt have to bridge anything). but i cant find it.

if you want all 3 HDDs but still want 2 optical drives (5 total IDE drives) you can get an PCI IDE adapter card or if your mobo is fairly new and has SATA support just get a SATA to IDE converter and move one of your HDDs to a SATA port.
for the cathodes if you want it run off your comp you can get a card slot bracket that has molexes, buy an antec PSU, or add an external molex to your PSU or case. i added an external molex to my PSU so its like an antec supply. you can also just get a 12 volt wall wart from anywhere (surplus or new) and add a molex or search for the aforementioned preassembled wallwart with molex.

Antec has a series of cold cathodes that run off of any standard USB port, those would be simplest method of setting up external cold cathodes.

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=77105

Edit:
Whoops, I read the page wrong. The tubes are LEDs diffusing through a plastic tube, not cold cathodes.

A little.Does anyone know how much power you can safely pull on the usb port? I know it probably varies some board to board. I would be concerned about loading to much on there

A usb cable can provide up to approx 500 milliamps of current, at 5 volts. And Well to my knowledge cathodes run off 12 Volts?

Or i guess u can do it if you use a hub which has its own individual power source.

There are transformers/inverters that can morph a 5v into whatever the CCFL needs...

Just so nobody gets it wrong like I did: Antec's external lights are actually LEDs diffusing their light through plastic tubes. The power requirements of these lights are well within the default voltage of any USB ports.
