Default Installing temp probe.....

I have a quick question, would it be best to tape down my temp probe across the top of the CPU with the tip touching the side of the die, or to dremel out part of the socket and run the probe underneath?
I am looking for accurate results but I don't want to damage the core in the process.

Dremel the socket and tape the probe to the bottom. That's the best way.

I'd go with having it on top of the CPU (but not running across the top of the die, I wouldn't think). Having the probe taped securely on top of the processor next to the die shouldn't hurt anything, so long as the probe itself can't conduct current - they're usually coated in a kind of clear plastic, I think.

Dremeling out part of the socket sounds like a good way to break the motherboard to me, but you probably know more than I do on that topic. I think that having the probe on the CPU would get you better results, however.

EDIT: it sounds as if BigAkita knows more of what he's talking about than I do, so you'd probably want to go with his reccommendation.

Should I run it on slow speed to avoid meting plastic?

personally i don't like the idea of dremel and mobo and plastic!

its just easier to tape it next to the die!

option : way of the dremel , if the mobo fuxors up and they see what you have done to the board then they won't RMA it or replace it!

basically id leave it as is

BA yah got any pics of the modz?

The best way is to get an extremely thin metal file. You can also use an exacto knife. You don't need to go very deep, just enough to lay the wire in. Understand that the wire can compress slightly also.

BA is a great modder but i dont like the idea of dremeling my socket. the file or knife might ease my worries but i dont like cutting a very key piece of my mobo.

But like i said BA has prolly done this a crap load of times. and i dont think he would recommend something that would be totally risky.

Damn Skippy. Most reviewers do this mod for accurate temps. GodFoot is staff now, which means he will be reviewing some items shortly. I applaude him for being proactive.

have you ever had the issue of slipping and fux0ring the mobo up?

Some of us have steady hands here, unless your loaded up on caffiene or something I don't see how you
could slip. Then again, Zennz and I, among others, have done much more risky operations on our boards,
like VDD solder-type mods and wiring the ATX connector wires directly to the board. Risky, but fun.

Anyway, I did it myself for the lower probe on my NF7-S, used a three-sided
file on edge making a diagonal grove accross a corner on the ZIF.
Remember, if the CPU can sit flush with a probe under it, you know you did a good job.

just a question here but why (practicality) would you solder you atx power to your board. just wondering.

To get better voltages, of course.

Yep, and to rid the eye of the main cause of cable clutter: excessively long and hard to manage ATX cables.

What do you does one do when they have to take their motherboard, PSU or both out?

Or do you just not do so at all?

BTW, your wording is a little weird.

Not do so at all. With a 600w Noisetaker & NF7-S with multiple voltage and
performance mods, I don't think I will ever upgrade this paticular system.

Next time I upgrade, it will be from the ground up, but for now,
the overclocked performance on this system is unsurpassed.

Besides, desoldering is really easy if, for some reason, I have to.

Well I guess that file set I got from Harbor Freight will finally get to see some action, with both this and a window I am cutting hopefully tomorrow if I finish the design tonight.

Is it really goin to be THAT important to have it on top of the CPU compared to the bottom? I mean honest I can see what you mean but its goin to be off only the slightest bit and your temp reader prolly has an error % bigger than the difference...
