| Machine shops hit the web: EMachineShop.com will let you use their software to design a machined metal/plastic/wood part. You get an instant quote and after you (yikes) pay for it, their automated machines will fabricate it for you and it'll get shipped out. Hmm, I wonder how much a bunch of custom laser-cut fan grilles would go for. Yeah, I know, some of you have access to a machine shop, but for the rest of us... | ||

| that is a great find. thanks for sharing. another alternative is to pull out a copy of your local yellow pages (or whatever they're called these days), and check into machine shops in your area. i can't stress this enough: if you do this, get a LOT of quotes on whatever you are trying to have made. i built a BURLY wood turning lathe (with the help of a local welder and machinist) several years ago, and i needed to have the spindle undergo some basic machining. here was the price range that i got from different machinists: $80 - $350 (yeah, that was for the same job). again, thanks for the awesome link. | ||

| Good to know, droe -- sure pays to shop around! Even if you end up going with a local shop, there's some good info on EMachineShop's site about design and keeping costs down. Such as steel being the easiest metal to laser cut (dissipates less heat than aluminum or copper), or that laser cutting thin slits is works best when it has a larger opening hole at one end. Or that forming sheetmetal (even with complex bends) is usually cheaper than milling a plate or rod. | ||

Sorry Iateronmly, I did a forum search for "emachineshop.com" just in case someone else had posted it. Not sure why yours didn't show up (still not showing up if you do that search). Anyway, nice find and rep for you! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| darn. I made the stupid little metal l bracket in the tutorial and it came up pretty cheap... IF YOU NEED 100 OF THEM!! I took the bend out and used some cheaper materials and the cheapest i could get them to was $7.00 apiece. So I suppose if we got a group buy together on something it might be worth having them made! | ||
