negative ions + computers

I was wondering if negative ions would have any adverse effects on computer parts? I was thinking about mounting one of these on a drive bezel and powering it with the computers 12v supply.

dont those things basicly clean with static? i had a kid at school tryin to tell me it uses "negitive" matter... asin dark matter..... yea.... he was a smarty

We've been having a lot of lightning storms so I don't need one of these (investing in more UPS's would be a better idea) but here's a USB model:

I don't think I'd be inclined to install one in my case. Aside from the prospect of damaging components, I'm pretty sure my case draws in much more air than such a small unit could possibly clean. Although, perhaps a larger one nearby...
