Default My First Mod Idea

Well before you flame me for this not being a mod, DONT, I dont care, I like it so i thought I would tell you guys. Ok so now for the idea:

I have a an annoying ass shuttle case that is really stupid since it doesnt have enough power, cooling, or space. So here is what i apln to do. First off I will be moving the hard drives to the outside of the case, and creating my own hotswap harddrive tower. I am going to use parts from one of my old cases and enclose it and add some fans. One drive will be secured in and the other drvie will be swabable, since i have a ton of games on different hard drvies. Then this willl connect via a rounded IDE cable intot he case, there are some holes in the back of the case for expansion that i am going to use. This also frees up some power in the case, which is needed for my next stage of the "mod."

I am going to throw out that stupid ICE cooling mod that came with it and put a better heatsink in the case, probably bigger too. Then where that ICE attached to the side if the case i am going to add a fan blowing air into the case. Also, im replacing the fan in the PSU with a more powerful one. I'll probably polish the heatsink to a mirror finish before putting it in.

I got that mesh sided case so there is plenty of air circulating through it. I may add some other lights and doo-dads depending on what the powersupply can handle. Hopefully I can start this project next week, should only take a day or 2, ill post pics of my progress.

u can say that again, i was ready to buy a new mobo and use my old case, but i decided this looked like an opportunity to try **** out. I was pricing small heatsinks today at the mall, and looks like its only 23$ for one, im not looking to overclock so it should be good.

Wow, what kind of mall do you have. Mine only has stupid ass stores and not a single shelf of any kind of computer componets let alone modders stuff. I have to get all my stuff off the net. Even though it would be smarter and cheaper anywayz,

yah can get heatsinks at radioshack and other computer related stores, even at staples they have them. But if yah really want a good fan cooling system i'd go with a zalman!!!! and if yah can afford it got out and get a h20 system to keep that monster cool!!

You sure you're not going to run into problems with the length of the IDE cables? Keep in mind that the IDE specs don't allow for anything longer than 36" (it's shorter than it sounds when you consider you'll have to route them out of the tower and then into the shuttle). But, that's the only problem I see. Good luck!

I live in Hong Kong, there is no staples o nothin and newegg dont ship here , so if i really need something i get it shipped state side and have a freind ship it here. Also, there are a few malls that have onyl computer stores that sell everything u can think of. I may have fixed my cooling prob, i just got like a big square heatsink that u can break different sized ones off of so i put one on everything, hope it will work. So far so good, but my fans are gettin pretty loud.

You don't say if you are going to use a PSU in your hotswappable hard drive tower.
Depending on the size of the hard drive tower you could always buy another lower wattage PSU and fit that into the HDD tower. Would save using a big size ATX PSU and also you would probably have some watts left over for some lights or something else.
Hope that was helpful

One thing I've been looking at that you may want to consider:

There are mini towers out there that typically house swappable HDDs, duplicator drives, or whatever else you can think of that have a stack of 5.25" bays, an independent PSU and several choices in interface cables (USB2, Firewire,SATA,Cat5E). If that Shuttle is new enough to have SATA connections or a spare PCI slot for a controller card, one could have a sweet setup with gobs of expansion and less speed loss than through an external USB enclosure.
Here's some cool looking external enclosures by Chyang Fun:

Well i broke the cpu, when i was installing the new heatink i dropped a screw in the case and truned it upside down to get it out, now realizing that my shuttle ddint have a clip that secures the cpu in place , so needless to say it fell out and landed on ym desk, thought it my still be good, but no it isnt. So now im gonna get a new mobo and a P4 2.8GHz 800MHz 1mb L2 cache. The mobo im getting is a decent asus one, looed good int he case, and the people are giving me a discount of 10% cause im buyin a PSU as well, and i haggled an extra 50 dollars off it, so its only 220$ and the mobo alone is 120US, the CPU is around 150US, and the PSU is another 50, so its a good deal, also they are throwin in a massive heatsink for my CPU and vid card, which is 50 on its own, and a free 1 year warranty. So shopping here is way better than new egg, ther are no fixed prices, and if they say they are u threaten to leave or say so and so store has it for less.

Whoa, a 2.8C with 1MB L2? That'd be a Prescott core... they get damned hot! I'm assuming your shuttle case is a small form factor? You might wanna do some searching on the net. Those CPUs have a bad rep., especially when they're used in small form factor cases, for killing yer other hardware.

I've never used one myself but I've heard alot about people havin' problems with them. Just make sure to research the known heat issues before you go with a Prescott.
