| I just got my Dynapower 600w PSU in. It's got more wires than you can shake a stick at. *chuckle* Wires: 2x Molex wires with 3x molex connectors 1x floppy connector ea. 2x PCIE wires w/1x PCIE connector ea. 2x SATA wires w/2x SATA connectors ea. 1x 4/8 pin wire for MoBo connection 1x 20/24 pin MoBo connector (comes w/adapter for 20pin) Also has one top fan, and one back fan. As I plan on putting a window in the top, I'll probably be removing the top fan. I already know where to get molex connectors for the modularizing, but for the life of me, I can't find SATA, 4/8 pin MoBo, or PCIE blank connectors for the modularizing. Anyone have any tips or know where I can get the parts I need to fully modularize this thing? Plans: Cut holes in top/right side for windows Paint interior red, exterior dark blue, back-side black 1x 3mm red LED at each corner of windows (for a total of 8x 3mm LEDs) Thanks in advance, ~ Duane | ||

I think you'll find that tidying up your PSU wiring has less to do with 'modularizing' and more about removing the excess length of all the cabling. It doesn't help too much to reduce the number of wires plugging into the PSU when the wires that ARE plugged in are each several feet longer than needed. Of course, cutting and resoldering Molex connectors after resizing the wires so that they just reach their respective component with a bit of slack is a lot more work (instead of just having to zip-tie a bundle of wires the size of your fist and stuff it out of the way somewhere), but the results are worth it. If you're not afraid to void the warranty on the PSU, or you don't see the future possibility of removing that PSU for use in a different computer, there's no reason not to do that. ![]()

| Frozencpu had a DIY modular PSU kit, last I checked. Can't tell you if it works or not. I was thinking of getting it, lemme know how it works if you decide to use it. And like Coel said, I'd cut some length off of those wires if you know where they're going and how long they need to be. Good luck! | ||

Yeah, I tend not to swap PSUs from one PC to the next, so I think it's a decent idea to cut all the wires to the lengths needed. I remember working on my micro-ATX case...the case was barely a foot and a half tall...so why the hell did it come with the front bezel wiring (power/reset switch, LED headers, etc.) that were fully 3 feet long?? That perfectly illustrates my point, to reduce the length of wiring going to your components to only just enough. With a modular PSU, true, you can leave out certain unneeded cables, such as the AUX1 cable(s), PCI-e cables (if using AGP), and sometimes the P4 connector (if using AMD chips)...but those unneeded wires would be just stuffed up and out of the way anyway, if it wasn't modular. The problem is the excess cabling that you *do* need...3 to 4 feet of cables when the distance to the first device is maybe 6 inches!

| All you need to "modularize" your PC is a pair of wire cutters, some splices (and a pair of dykes to crimp them), wire sheathing, some electrical tape or shrink tube, and a couple split-terminals from Radioshack. I used a couple power terminals and cut my PSU wires to length in my PC. I can say that it's definitely worth the effort... as your interior will look beautifully clean and tidy and your airflow will most likely benefit as well. Check out my gallery for some photos of my mod. | ||

| I've actually looked at kits from several different suppliers...frankly, I can get the exact number of parts that I need for less. The kits cost so much because they come with molex pin removal tool(s), which I quite frankly don't need or want. I've got a crap load of tools as is. ![]() As for shortening the wires, that actually sounds like a good idea...but I've only got my case (which is currently sitting on my workstation -completely- disassembled being made ready for cuts and painting). But seeings how I want this to end up looking uber-professional, I'll probably go with shortening the wires too. Going to need a lot of shrink wrap. ![]() Thanks for the suggestion, I'll make sure I put it to good use. And I think I know what I'm going to do about those sata cables, since I'm only going to need one of them (my HDD will be in a 5.25 bay, so there won't be a need for two sets of sata cables, hence the desire to modularize) I figure on looking at the molex-sata connector I have and learning how it's wired so I can do the same for the PSU modularizing...I'll let you guys know if it works or not...after I test this PSU to make sure I didn't get a dud...-edit- worse comes to worse, I'll just take the molex to sata adapter that I have and extend the wires and simply remove the sata cables from the PSU, as I can always get more adapters. -edit-Last edited by Duane2184; 19-June-07 at 07:24 PM..
