Default Heatsink Mod?

Hey guys, I'm new here, but I have recently fallen in love with PC Modding. Some of the work here is jaw dropping, and I'd like to say thanks to you guys for sharing your insights.

I somehow got the idea that a spinning heatsink would be neat. Rather than have a heat sink + fan, make the heatsink rotate LIKE a fan, and maybe it'll be cooler? I don't know. How would I even go about doing this? I think it'd be impossible because the heatpipes would have no way to connect to the CPU to transfer heat any way because of the motor required...

if anybody has any suggestions/links, that'd be great

P.S. sorry if I'm way out of my own league here. Just kinda excited after reading all these worklogs.

well the only way I can see that working is if the top of the heatsink is the only part that spins. The base must be stationary and make contact with the processor in order to cool it properly. Since a heatsink is designed to pull heat away from the processor, that would make the upper part of your heatsink entirely useless, but it might look cool if done properly. Yes, the heatpipes would have to below that part that spins.

I think this is a really impractical idea, but props for thinking of something I've never heard suggested before. Crazy ideas are how innovation begins. Who knows? maybe you can find a way.

It can be done, makeing a heatsink that spins inst improbalble, but the spinning part would pretty much just be a aluminum/copper fan.

But without proper connection to the base the spinning part would have no true cooling power, other than moving air.

I agree with S1ugh34d, it wouldn't be impossible, just not very useful. Also, I get first dibs on the Welcome Wagon!

Welcome to PC Apex!

Enjoy your stay, and be sure to check out the links that I'm sure T2 will drop on you in a bit.
