Default Hard Drive Trouble....

Well, I was over at my friends house because I was giving him about 40 gigs of vids. His comp hasn't an ethernet port. Burn 60 CDs? No... So i figured it would be ok to take his HDD out and put it in my machine and simply transfer the files. Well now I wish i would have put my drive in his machine.. . which would have actually made more sense anyway:

My PSU is definitely on the fritz. Its acting up. Quite frequently, my comp enjoys an auto-reboot because my PSU fails to supply constant power in times of system stress. Come to think of it now... I wish I would have put it in his machine!! But oh well.. what's done is done....

So during the transfer, it of course rebooted itself a few times. However, all was well until I put the HDD back into his machine. It went unrecognized. Hmmm... Let's stick it back in my machine because it worked and lets back up your stuff. Well, unfortunately, it doesn't work in mine either.

So I'm wondering what's going on. I really don't think that the drive is spinning up. It's certainly getting hot, but I really don't think it's doing much more than that. I was reading www.deadharddrive.com and was wondering if because of my crappy PSU, i had done the same thing. The only other thing I could think of is that while taking out his HDD from my case, I accidentally brushed it across my PC speaker. Is that magnet enough to mess anything up?

Any help would be much appreciated. I'm am really in over my head here!!

Does the bios recognize the drive?

No...

The BIOS does not recognize the drive. Nothing does... I really don't think the drive even spins up anymore. It gets hot.... but no spin... no recognize... no data... lots of trouble!!

Someone please.... I suppose i will resort to the logic board swapping method as described in www.deadharddrive.com... but im really wondering if anyone else has any better ideas, and if its even the logic board that is the problem!!

If the drive isn't spinning, you are in trouble. There is one last option if you need to recover data from it. Stick it in the freezer for a couple hours. When you pull it out immediately slap it in your computer and boot to get what you need off it.

Hmm.. well i tried sticking it in there overnight, but when i took it out i decided to wait a few hours so that the temp change wasn't so harsh. But i suppose that is the point isn't it...

well.. supposedly the cold temps shrink the parts that makes the thing spin or something that had expanded to much due to heat or a surge or something... and shrinking them back and heating them up again that fast is supposed to allow them to reset themselves such that the drive can spin again...

Something like that...

Well... i know its been a while...

Alas, the freezer trick didnt work. It's still not spinning up. How does the ever so expensive data recovery thing work? And should i try switching the logic boards before I try that?

Try a different psu. If problem persists see below.

If the pornos you so desperately are trying to save are THAT good, then I suggest you go to compusa and ask for a drive data recovery. Costs $100-$200. Just make sure the technician is a dude because it would be embarassing to have a dudette see all your porn files wouldnt it? I wouldnt know. Sorry, I shouldnt be making fun of a serious situation...

Personally I would just RMA the drive.

Hmm...

Well i have tried a different PSU (and the rebooting problem persists, but thats a nother problem) and the hard drive still wont spin up. And yes, I'm sure my friend has tons of porno on this drive... lol... but whatever is on it we need it!!

What is RMA?

And tycoon.. im not sure if i should feel insulted for that suggestion! All of the cables and their connections are fine. I have tried multiple IDEs and multiple... power ones(?).

But anyway... unless RMA'ing is something cool i guess it will be the logic board switch... or I may just decide to be lazy and take it to data recovery. How exactly does data recovery work?

RMA is simply sending the drive in for replacement ...... your data will be lost.

Well... who cares.. .they prolly do what they can depending on the case. Anyway... so does anyone else think it may be a logic board problem? If so I'll prolly try the switch thing instead of data recovery.

Not only do hard drive manufacturers not have the equipment to extract data from damaged drives, but they also do not perform data recovery, period. You can try finding a drive exactly the same as yours and swapping logic boards but I don't think its worth it.

Do what i do when i get pissed at harddrives..................beat it with a hammer and drop cement blocks on it till it shatetrs then take it back together and it works as a maraca(true story) but on a serious note i would goto best buy my uncles stop spinning and started to smoke we took it to best buy and that guy busted out and switched out the actual magnetic disks somehow and put them in another. I was like wohhhhhh........ so after that long story id say goto best buy.
