Default LCD's and Gaming... A good mix?

3 topics in 4 days, I feel like such a spammer.

My wife wants to get me a new display for my birthday coming up and I play a decent amount of FPS games...

I have a crappy 17" now and I will be upgrading to at least 19" or something.

Any of you play many games on these flat panel monitors?

LCD, Plasma, CRT, Whats the deal? I have seen some 19" LCD's for about $600, not bad but I would hate to plunk down 6 C-notes for a screen that displays MS Word doc's really well but ghosts like a mutha in my games of choice. (BF1942 and Planetside).

Ive seen other sites review and they all disagree, TomsHardware gave one monitor a 2 star rating for games while another gave the same one a 8.9 out of 10.

I dont know who to trust but you people.

Thanks!

I use a Samsung 760V TFT, its 2 years old and have no real problem with gaming. I play AA mostly.

To be completely honest BZA, I've never played games on an LCD; I always have used CRT (tube) monitors.

The issue most people complain about when gaming on LCD's is the 'ghosting'. With all the fast moving images on FPS games, the pixels can't refresh fast enough. This leads to a loss of clarity and a type of ghosting. Pixel refresh rates on LCD I believe have improved of late, or so I am told, but the best thing to do is try it out yourself. I'm sure your local Best Buy has a selection of LCD's you can test drive...

Best of luck!

test drive? really? *calls bestbuy right now*

*sits on hold*

*notes the gayness of the bestbuy hold guy voice*

*clicks to bestbuy.com because he told me to*

*still holds*

*types this*

Hmmmm, 14 day return period with no restocking fee, but I still need to buy it outright to try it.

May be worth it.

Anyway, good to know.

If you don't mind the bulkiness of large CRT monitors, which I'm guessing you don't because you've had one up until now, I would just go with a high-rate one of those. Usually you will get the same performance for a much lesser price than a quality LCD. LCD's have been making great strides, but it is a generally accepted notion that standard monitors are just better for gaming when compared to LCD's of equal price. If you are looking to clean up your desktop, by all means go for a LCD then. I haven't actively looked for one that is good for gaming but I'm sure they are out there. Check around and surf some forums. I'm sure the exact same question has been asked many times before.

Look for 16ms pixel response time. There may still be a small amount of ghosting but you would reallllly need to look. Or wait for the LCDs with 12ms response time.

i have a 17 inch KDS LCD from costco and i dont notice ghosting like on older LCDs. the only problem with LCDs is that fixed res displays like LCDs look like crap if you try displaying stuff that isnt at its native res.
if you look at plasma look at a projector instead. or a LCD rear projection set.

I have 17" flat panel and I have no problems with ghosting or anyy other image problems. I dont have one but I would recommend either one of the 17" or 19" dell flat panels or any samsung flat panel. The newer version of Feral's is in the 500 to 600 dollar range I believe. I have a Daewoo and its rock solid. Ive had it almost a year now and have had no pixels go out or any other problems with it.

Personally I cant stand lcd’s maybe iv only played on crappy ones, being the professional FPS player I am lcd don’t cut it when moneys on the line and you paid 500$(Canadian) for a graphics card to get 100 fps …All the “hardcore” FPS gamers I know use Sony Trinitron CRT’s. So do I ..they own.

I have played UT2K3, RTCW, and MOAA on the 18" and 19" Viewsonic VX800s and VX900s. They both have 25ms response time, and I didn't see any ghosting. Even the minor ghosting that may happen, is barely noticeable. I'll take the crisp graphics and DVI anytime. Just remember that most flat panels have a max rez of 1280x1024. The VX800 goes for $560 at NewEgg. I'd get them because of quality and 0 dead pixels of all the ones I've received at work (10).
