In a recent discussion, HTRN asked what folks thought of the LightScribe enabled drives. I told him I would get one and let him know what I thought, and it arrived tonight.
The drive I purchased (from NewEgg, of course) is the OEM Samsung SH-S162L that was bundled with a lightscribe enabled OEM version of Nero 6. The drive has all the bells and whistles besides being LightScribe enabled and was only $35. However, the media is a little expensive. I got a 30 pack of Verbatim 8X LightScribe DVD+R for $24 and a 30 pack of Verbatim LightScribe CD-R for $18.
The regular backup of data and disks is just as fast as any other drive I have, so the big deal here is the labeling. The software with Nero is very simple to use and gives you plenty of options for adding custom graphics, text, and shapes. I burned a simple card theme that circled a disk with some text in about 7 minutes but the text was real hard to read, even on best quality. I hit the LightScribe website and found a contrast add-on to fix that. I then burnt the image below and it took about 30 minutes. The quality is great, and the effects are pretty cool.
I hate backing up my music CD's and movie DVD's then writing on them with a Sharpie because it looks so cheap and unprofessional. One of the first things I'll use the drive for is to make some new "toolkits" that I use at work to fix
PC's; a tech theme will look a hell of a lot better than my poor handwriting.
I like it and if you are in the market for a new DVD writer, you might as well add the LightScribe capability. It doesn't really add any cost to the drive. You just need to be willing to pay a few extra bucks for the media.
Does that answer your question, HTRN?
