Default Memory Woes

Im working on a computer at work, and I was attempting to run a test to see if doubling the ram in the computer would solve some of the operating problems it was having while running the equipment attached to it. Then the unexpected happend, I installed the 2nd stick of ram, a 512 pc2700 stick from a company called spectek. When the computer booted again, I checked out the system properties to make sure it read it right. Thats when windows said it still only had 512. So I then moved the sticks around, in every possible configuration of the 2 ram sticks and 3 slots for the ram, and windows still says it only has 512. I went into the Bios the last time, and it said that it had 1024 MB of Memory. I then booted into windows proper, and it still said it only had 512. So my question is, does windows have a setting that disables a ram slot, or is it a motherboard thing(I do not have access to a manual for the motherboard) or if anyone else has any ideas as to what would cause this.

PC specs are:
AMD 2500+ processor
Asus A7V8X-X/Lan Motherboard (a ViA board)
the ram chips are a pair of SpecTek 512 MB PC2700's
It has a 120 GB Western Digital Hard drive
and is running WIndows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.

Thanks in advance for any help offered by you wonderful people

try a reinstall, or go into device manager, and see if thare is something for the ram, disable it, and re enable it. If that dosent work, try a reformat, if that dosent ork, its probobly a bad stick or slot

wait

run 48 hrs of prime, see if it passes, if it does, than, i would continue with what i said above,

if not, i would start to check the mobo and cpu, starting with the cpu

You cannot download it from the link I posted, or no net connection???

Iit's tiny (411K) and would fit on a floppy or USB stick.

No, i dont have admin access to install software. Also, reformatting or running anything for 48 hours is impossible, the machine is in use 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. as for the slots or memory being bad, I know the memory is good because they both worked individualy, and no matter what configuration of the 3 slots and 2 sticks i used, (all 8 of hem) the bios would say 1 gig, and then windows would say 512
