Default psu problem

Well i went to repair two computers my freind has at his house, one is a hp which was removed from the original case to a thermaltake one. The other is a custom made computer. Both had psu problems, on the 5v rail. They are on surge protectors, so its weird. The hp one worked perfectly for about 5 years. The other one is 1 month old. Anyone got any ideas what caused this? Also the hp one the bois said the -5v rail was running at freaking -61.48 WTF??? any thoughts??

Have you measured the 5V rail with a voltmeter, or are you relying on the motherboard sensors

Please post more info if you want help. What was the problem? are the systems unstable, crash only while gaming, etc?

I have seen PSU problems that resulted from a bad fan causing the PSU to overheat. Once the fan was replaced everything was back to normal.

What brand is the power supply in question? If it's generic

of got a big surge.

it is generic but they both died at the same time. the computer would not detect the hard drives on either of the computers, when i tested with a psu tester the -5 rail led would not light -_- weird

If they both died at the same time then he got a
big power surge/spike. The HP may need a P/S
from HP. Almost any P/S should work for the other.
I recommand getting a decent brand name P/S :-)
