DVD-RW stops spinning during DVD playback

Been having problems with my sony DRU-720a dvd burner lately. When I am watching a movie or playing a DVD-A or dualdisc it will stop spinning for 3-4 seconds, then start up again with no rhyme or reason.

So far all I've done is updated the firmware, anyone have any ideas other than it could be going bad?

Can it be tested on a diff PC?

i have a 510 which used to have somewhat the same issue .... i oppened it up, cleaned it with "alcohol"
( yes, you all read it right ..... against all recommendations

i used rubbing alcohol )

and now it works fine .... reads, plays, and records perfectly ....

Unfortunately, due to my case mod, it's a major event to remove the DVD drive, I would only want to do that as a last resort heh.

Nero infotool is reporting that my ASPI layer is corrupted. Maybe that's the cause?

that could be.... reinstall it !
