Default ESD Question

Um, so there's this issue I am a part of that involves a dead or "crashed" - as this guy calls it - hard drive and a "crashed" motherboard - I am pretty sure he means broken. The machine had two PCI NICs, which were both removed, then put back in a little while later (the NICs were the only things that were touched). As you may have gathered by now, the hard drive and mother board are not working (or so I've been told).
I would like to get some more oppinions here, so if you could tell me how likely it is that some one could have so much static electricity built up on them that by removing two NICs, both the motherboard and hard drive would get fried.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, I have not actually seen this myself, I have only been told this. My idea is that it's not the best idea to run an ASUS board (I am sorry, I don't know the model, but it was a pretty decent one with all sorts of OCing features), a socket 775 P4 and about a gig of cheap RAM on a $15 dollar PSU.

Thanks and Happy Holidays

Depends. If he or she walked a mile across a carpet then yes. But if they went a short distance ( 1 or 2 footsteps) Then no .

O.o They must have screwed something up to make the hardrive not work, or it never worked, or just crashed. As for the mobo, You cant kill it by removing 2 cards. At most you would kill the cards

Since you mentioned that they were using a $15 power supply.

The first thing i would do is to test the psu. To see if the psu didnt take a dump. It's kinda hard to swallow that esd killed all those parts. I would have to put my two cents on that cheap power supply.

I hope this helps.......

Hey, thanks you guys. Yeah, I wasn't walking a mile accross carpet. It was a few meters accross a class room with a tile floor that had some water on it (melted ice and snow). One of my teacher's is telling me that "some one must have had a lot of static built up", "it was working before you guys used it" and "you (me, andrew) need to be careful and should cary around a grounding band" followed by him showing me his new laminated sign about static build up.

Arg, sorry for my rambling and thanks for the responses

I use alligator clips attached to my watch, attached to this metal lamp that has a 3 pronged Plug. (and I can prove this works)

ESD clips have a resistor in them, I dont know why since current goes to the path nearest to ground

I dont think tile floor could cause it. I worked in a tiled floor room and nothing ever blew.

I was working beside all sorts of desktops that were - and probably still - running, so I kept touching them for grounding goodness, because this perticular teacher scares the living daylights out of me.

Keep that quiet, though

I'd bet much loved parts of my anatomy that it's the cheap PSU or something he F.U.B.A.R.ed and not ESD.
