Default Hard drives questions

well hello there fellow pimps, long time no posting but i have a few questions, i just recently bought a new HD.

new: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144417

one i am using currently: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144118

now i built my rig from the ground up, but i don't know jack about linking HD's and RAID and all that other stuff, i was originally planning to just hand down the 120gb and use the 250gb solo but ive been reading on the boards here and other places that its a good idea to use one HD for OS and the other for games and what not.

I noticed the new drive is SATA and the older is IDE, can i link these?
If it is wise to use both of these together, which one should I put the OS on?

Like i said i know a bit about comps but when it comes to HD's im lost.

also i dont know if this info is viable but my mobo is a Asus K8N-E Deluxe

Probably the IDE would be best for the OS, and the SATA Drive for games.

I dont think you can put IDE and SATA in RAID format, they have to be all IDE or SATA

Raid only works one one kind of interface... IDE OR Serial ATA, in your case, not "cross interface"...

Whatever you do I'd put the swap file on the fastest drive... and the OS on the slower one...
No matter how much memory you have, Windows XP still likes to use the swapfile... putting it
on a faster, seperate drive really speeds things up...

Actually, I would recommend putting Windows AND all your programs on the SATA drive. Faster load times this way. Depending on the motherboard, though, it might be a pain to get working. I've never had good luck with it, but I don't have good luck with anything.

If you had all of the drives on the same kind of interface (all SATA or all IDE), you could run a RAID style called JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Drives). You wouldn't see a performance jump, but it would be really cool to say you've got one HUGE hard drive.

PS: Venture Brothers is an AWESOME cartoon.

yes connect them, but would it be smart to connect two different types of HD's being an IDE and a SATA or should i just wait till i have two SATA compatible drives?

p.s. I agree Ator brock samson is the man

I loved that show, the venture brothers. My fav was probably the christams one where the 2 brothers release this demon and it starts humping their father.

Anyway, It doesnt matter. IDE has a transfer of 133Mbs, and SATA has a transfer rate of 166Mbs or greater. Id say hook them both up and keep them there. As time goes on slowly upgrade to SATA, but still keep your IDE drives.

I have a 74gb raptor for my boot partition with all the games and programs installed on the Raptor. I have all my saved games and downloaded what not installed on my 120. my harddrive performance is great. plus i have the added safety if my OS goes south i dont lose all my important data. Just use what the newest interface is (the SATA drive) for your OS and Swap file and then use the 120 for storage and what not.

what do you mean by swap file and say i want to put my OS on my 120gb and use the SATA for storage, first of all from a previous post they said i should put the OS on the 120gb and the swap file on the 250gb along with storage but i have no idea what a swap file is and secondly

to use the SATA drive for storage do i just use the windows xp disc to format it or do i need some other drivers to use it for storage, and if so, how and where can i get them?
