I have a few quick questions for you about what you have tried.

1. Is it the bios or windows that doesn't recognize the drives?
2. Is the bios configured to auto detect hard ide devices?
3. Have you used different cables each time or the same one?
4. How old are the PC's, any chance they are old enough that the bios can't see drives that large?

Sounds like it's not formatted. Question does the bios show it there and windows can't find it?

dont forget to check the jumpers and listen to it so you know it atleast powers up
if its an external drive the controller might not be mounting it

  • Internal or external drive?
  • If internal, is your jumper set properly?
  • If internal, SATA, SCSI, or IDE?
  • In either case, did you connect both the power cable and the SATA/SCSI/IDE cable? (that means plugging two different cables into the drive)?
  • How old is the drive?
  • Where was it beforehand? Did you get it from a store, or did you pick it up from a friend, or did you find it laying around in a trash heap?
  • What are the make/models of the computers your plugged it into, and what is the make/model of the drive itself?
You'll notice a lot of people are asking you a lot of questions for what you thought was a very simple solution -- the reality is, of course, that no matter how simple the solution is, there is a different (simple)solution for each of the scenarios we're asking about. As soon as those questions are answered, we can help you much more.

Looking forward to hearing back from you,
-godling

Should be able to get a rough idea of the age of the E-machine by the speed and type of the CPU.
Also try hooking it into the system as the only drive on the cable with the jumper set to CS (cable select)
