Default HDD lockout !!!!!!

Ok , i think this is what its called., i think i locked the bios on this drive or ???......... i have a quantum fireball 40.0gb P/N QML40000LD-A , and it had 98 installed on it, i couldnt for the life of me get it to take XP, so i tryed to wipe it and then format it, no go. I then tryed to LLF it and it keeps coming up with a "51H register error" and wont let me LLF. What i would like to know is, is there any program or way i can set this HDD back to factory, bios and all?? or is it just a case of me doin' an OOPS, and this drive is now an ornament for my scrap pile???

EDIT: side note, how the hell do you boot your pc up in DOS mode?? i for the life of me cant remember??? DUH

Well to boot into dos using a Win98 machine you can press F8 to get to the boot options. and if memory servesme there is a option for MS-DOS mode. If you dont have a Win98 install you can use the 98 install CD. there will be the option of boot from harddrive or boot from CD-rom. Choose CD-rom, then it will ask if you want to start 98 setup or start PC with/without CD-rom support. choose with CD-rom support and when it is done installing the CD-rom drivers you will have a DOS prompt.

hope that helps

Thanks for the help guys, and TDR , great site Bro i D/L EVERYTHING THEY HAD

Now, for part two, it was still bein' wonky so i reset CMOS and actually changed everything out save the HDD mem, and MoBo , so all new CDRom , floppy , cables etc etc and now i booted into DOS **THX CR** and got it to go to fdisk. It asked me if i wanted to enable large **** support but said if i did i would not be able to access the drive by anything other than FAT32 , ???? so when im done with fdisk does this mean i will have to install winXP in FAT32 form yes??? or can i use either F32 or NTFS

You can install XP in a FAT32 setup (think of it as upgrading from 98/Me to XP), and then do the convert to NTFS with no problems... The worst it could do is install and then tell you, "NO, I WON'T"

Thanks for the offer CR , and i think im gonna have to , i have tryed EVERYTHING i can think of from FDISK , ZEROFILL, KILLDISK , Maxblast , and so on , i even hooked it up to a second rig **Jager gave me the idea**as a storage drive. So i finally got the pc to recognize it in "device manager" but it wont show up in "my computer". When i hooked it up the first time to my other rig , a P4 2.0GHz IBM Eserver , after it posted it started looking for a MAC Addrs. So if my post isnt TOO confusing, anyone got any ideas. i mean the pc im tryin to install it in see's it, windows goes through the install up to the point where it asks if i want to install, delete, or create a partition, but it wont let me do any of them.

SO IM CLUELESS !!! i just hate to toss a 40gb drive **and i have 4 that are all doing the same thing**
good lord,someone save me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you said that it wasnt showint up in my computer, if youwere on XP did you go in to computer management in the admin tools and re-partition the drive? if not XP will see it in device manager but it wont be an active disk with out the partition.
