I looked into that along time ago, it realy isn't needed unless you are having issues..is that what you meant by "Playing up"?

You may need to download a small utitlity from maxtor to do the update.

Check out part two of this link, its not exactly what you are looking for but its in the general vicinity.

http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...downloadID=140

Part Two – Firmware Upgrade
  1. Double click on Maxtor Quick start icon on your desktop.
  2. Once the MSS is located on your network, select it and click NEXT.
  3. Select Drive Management
  4. This will open up a web browser. If you have applied a password to the unit it will prompt you to enter it at this time.
  5. After entering you password select ADVANCED SETTINGS > SYSTEM MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM UPDATE.
  6. You will see a page stating that the MSS will be unavailable to users during the upgrade. If necessary notify all users that access the MSS of this downtime before proceeding. Click Next.
  7. The Performing System Update page is displayed. Click on Browse.
  8. Browse to and select the mss_v_2_4_2.bin file extracted to your desktop in part one. Click Open.
  9. Click Update.
  10. The firmware update will start. A status bar will show the System Upgrade Process. When finished the MSS will automatically restart and the System Restart Progress bar appears. The restart process takes approximately two (2) minutes to complete. During this time, no user intervention is necessary. Once the System Restart Progress: bar reaches 100% a Performing System Update page displays notifying you that the Shared Storage drive has been successfully updated. Click Done to return to the System Maintenance Options Page. Close your Browser and proceed to Part Three.
The new firmware version 2.4.2 can be viewed from the upper left corner of the MSS browser pages.
