Default Best Usage for DVD-RAM drive?

Ok, so I'm finally getting to the point where I am settled in enough that the Mrs. is going to let me start installing some of the other goodies I acquired over the "vacation" I recently took.

While I was visiting my parents, my Dad asked me to help him out with some OS and hardware problems he was having, at home and at work. As payment, he offered me a gently used DVD-RAM drive. I already have a DVD Burner and a DL DVD Burner, so what's the dealio with the DVD-RAM drives?

Does anyone use them (still), and if so, what have you found to be the best application for said hardware?

"DVD-RAM discs can be recorded and erased repeatedly but are compatible only with devices manufactured by the companies that support the DVD-RAM format. DVD-RAM discs are typically housed in cartridges."

I guess I should have seen that one coming... Thanks, Nerdz...

So basically, they can be used as a backup media of sorts, that can be written and re-written to almost infinitely, I suppose?

Does anyone here use one on a somewhat daily basis, or has used one in the past?

It would seem to me that I could use it for weekly/monthly/whatever backup of files, whether pictures, audio, downloaded apps and whatnot... Kinda like an external hard drive is used?

Yea, I dont think DVD-RAM caught on to the main stream though.

Ive never used DVD-RAM (I think because it was too expensive or something, sure it could hold 9GB of crap but it was the price of 20 or so DVD-R's..

Im sure thats what the orignal plan was to make it like a portable hardrive.
