Question external hdd now not working

i have an external usb laptop hdd (40g) 5400 rpm which i use to save data before reformatting.its only 4 months old and was working perfectly.i have reformatted and tweaked and done everything else with windos (installed and uninstalled heaps of progs) and now it is not recognised by win xp pro.when it is plugged in the led lights up but thats it.i have tried it in both my pc's and same result - nothing.
has anyone had same or similar problem to this?.
many thanks in advance

i have had the same problem,

try two things,

go into disk managment and make sure you can see it in there and that it has a drive letter

try booting off a knopix cd.... and then plug in the hdd.... knopix will find it....

also can you hear the hard drive spinning?
