Default HDD Booting Problems

Hi there,

So here is my problem. My hdd was working fine, then my friend and i removed it and put a differnt hdd into it. We formatted and installed xp on the other drive then removed and put my original hdd back in. After I put my original hdd back in, it would no longer boot. It will boot of cd, ie xp pro, but will not boot off hdd. My computer says that my hdd is there and i can format and copy files from my xp cd, but it will not let me go further than that. I checked my bios settings, and they are still good, and all the cables are connected properly.

Any suggestions on this would be great.

My hdd is a Maxtor, ide connection. I am running a athalon 3000.

zero write and reformat / repartition the drive ,it'l be like new. If you can, use the maxtor "max blast" bootable cd that came with it. Also make sure you have the jumpers set appropriately for master or slave

I did try to reformat and repartition the drive. Still no luck

Also consider that if you have your HD plugged into say the secondary spot on your ide cable and the jumper set to master you may experience problems. Move the HD to a different location on your cable either way to see if it makes a difference.

Here's my two cents.....

If the drive was working when you removed the drive.
What did you do when you took it out?
Did the drive by chance get jarred or dropped while it was out of the computer?

If you checked the jumpers and your positive they are correct. You could try using a spare ide cable to see if its bad.

Definately download maxtor's diagnostic tools(Powermax) off their website and run it. As for the powermax software you can download the bootable iso version and burn it to cd.

Let's see if the drive fails running any of the diagnostic tests. This will tell us if it works or its a new found paperweight.

I hope this helps.....
Let us know what happens......
