thinkpad lcd flickers

My moms thinkpad A30 lcd is flickering. It seems to only flicker badly when windows are open. Usually the way I fix these problems is by replacing the lcd but this time I want to see if it's something simple like the invertor or a cable or the backlight. IBM is great for troubleshooting but I can't find anything specific to what the screen is doing. If you look closely in the pic you can see a shadows going up across the screen. I get about 50 of those a second. Any idea?

If it always across the top I would say its the inverter or the top CC.
