| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Don't think so ... the nozzles have probably dried out. Somewhere in the control panel ('Start' button .. 'printers & faxes' {in winXP} ... right click on the printer & select 'properties') there should be a 'clean' option ... if not there & there's an icon in the toolbar, try that ... run that a few times before you chuck the black cartridge ![]() | |

| I got interested in this and did some quick research. You didn't mention a model. First you need to make sure that there is no physical problem with your cartridges or printer. I don't know how much of this "chip resetting" thing is for real! There seem to be claims that some printers especially HP, Epson and Lexmark have chips that can be reset when they shut down. These manufacturers have decided on a "page count" for the lifespan of these cartridges rather than an ink quantity. The 3rd party Ink refill companies are selling devices that reset the chips so that you can refill your cartridge and keep using it. In your case, you may need the chip resetter just to use all your original ink. The HP and Epson chip resetters seem to be easier to find. The Lexmark was bit more obscure. My research was brief, so you may want to go through these links and do some searching on your own: Info regarding law suits over HP cartridge chips http://news.designtechnica.com/article6659.html Methods of resetting chips http://www.inksupply.com/chipreset.cfm Epson ship resetter, can one be modified for other printers? http://www.9to6.com/products/refilltools.htm Lexmark chip resetter? http://www.rechargerstore.com/shop/default.php?rssid=512e4e61b7c3ec7e89d55141c7e78c20 Good Luck. Hope this gets you started. Personally, if this was a frequent problem for me, I'd get a different printer, instead of dealing with self stopping cartridges! BTW my Canon s9000 cartridges sometimes "stall". I take em out, put them back in again. Good as new. Last edited by prime-evil; 08-November-05 at 01:25 PM.. | ||

| I had a black cartridge a while back that wouldn't print. I took it out of the printer, and with a damp paper towel, carefully blotted the area where the ink comes out. After the ink comes out w/ that method, I took another dry paper towel and did the same process to to make sure the ink still came out. Seemed to be a fix for my problem. Another think to do is take a new, never used pencil eraser and rub it on the contacts of the cartridge to clean them off. Both of these tips were given to me by the tech support at Lexmark. Hope it helps a bit. Never heard about the printing chips either, so I'll check into that later and see what I can find. | ||
