Default My modtream started smelling

Today after the computer had been on for a while my 8 months old OCZ Modstream started smelling bad, like burned plastic or a fried electric engine or something. There were no smoke and the computer is running fine. I turned the computer off let it cool down and start it up again later and the wierd smell is still coming from the PSU. I fear that if i leave it running the smell will fill the room (or better yet - burn).

Anyone got some idea to what it might be?

Silly me, but I think the PSU is innocent. I removed my optical drives and my fanspeed controller and it doesnt smell anymore. Ill check each of them later to see wich one of them is the badguy.

If I had to guess, I would suspect the fan speed controller first.

Seems so. Got any alternate fanspeed controllers to recommend?

Sure, but it depends on what you want. Do you want JUST a fan controller, or perhaps a multi-function panel?
What exactly would you like it to do?

Im just after the ability to scale down fan speed. It does not have to look good or sport extra features at all, aslong as it controls my fans (3+) and doesnt smell like my previous Zalman controller (pictured below)...

Since im going to hide it behind a large front panel, looks is really the last thing on my mind

I like this one as well...

Great thing about it, imho.. is that you can regulate voltage from 12v all the way down to 0v!
I bought it to control the lighting of my fans.. works great! Fun thing is that it is rated for like 20watts
per channel...

Hehe I had to cut off the tips of the flip switches on it to make it fit at all behind the front panel. And yes, the mounting was horrible. Good riddance. Now im running speedfan directly off the mobo...

I gotta vouch for the Sunbeam one as well, I got one in my case that keeps my 120's running nice. My friend also has 2 of them in his and no problems. A huge + is that you can actually turn the fan to "off", kinda nice. Stay away from PWM controllers, the fans hooked up to it will make a really annoying buzzing sound.

I agree! Unless you fit one of these;

Quote:
Electronic attenuation for all fans up to 16V
  • audible reduction of fan noise like humming, piping or rumbling
  • compatible with all fans
  • improves operating characteristics of every fan and increases its life-time
  • effective analogue attenuation and filtering
  • possibility of connecting up to 2 fans

The Attenuator is an electronic attenuation device which is optimised for PC fans. It eleminates easy and audible fan noise thanks to an effective analogue attenuation and filtering of voltage. Especially noise effects like rumbling, humming and piping are strongly reduced.

The Attenuator is optimal for digital fan controls, but also for analogue ones with high-frequent ripples.

The Attenuator can be connected easily in front of the fan and reduces immediately all sorts of fan noise. There can be up to 2 fans connected to the Attenuator.

Specification:

  • 20 x 35 x 12 mm
  • up to 6 Watt
  • compatible with all fans up to 16V
  • operates tacho signal
  • contents of package: Attenuator, fan cable, installation manual

Compatible:

The Attenuator is compatible with all digital and analogue fan controls.

Attention, please check the cable connectors, in some cases adapters

(e.g. 3 pin to 2 pin) might be necessary.

They are from mCubed. I bought a bunch of those and I can really vouch for them!

Believe it or not... I also got the Zahlman, which I 'modded (used Vinyl dye on the back of
the faceplate so it is "mirror black" instead of "transparant blue" now..., I exchanged the
knobs for black ones with indicators and I painted the switches black). I'll post some pics
of the device tomorrow!!

The Zahlman will be used to regulate my fans between 5v and 12v and the switches
on it will be used to turn my uv 'tubes on or off... like said, the Sunbeam will be used
to regulate the leds from my fans (or turn them off).

Mounting won't be much of a problem in my tower... it's old-style... no rails nor doors...lol..

I found the culprit!

It seems my new 10cm CCFL inverter (or whatitsname) was the source of the bad smell. It seems it had been roasted somehow.

You guys think the inverter was bad or could it be possible that the CCFL pipe is faulty and is about to roast my backup inverter?

I swear you could have taken that photo right off of my camera's memory card. The same thing happened to me about a month ago. I had two UV CCLs (a 12" and a 4") running of of one inverter, and it totally fried just like that one. Scared the pants off of me at the time. Luckily I noticed pretty quickly that the lights were out, so I traced it to the inverter in a hurry. I switched it out with a different inverter, and everything has been running fine since then.
