Default SATA150 vs SATA3.0gbps

I'll get what I know out of the way first.

SATA150:
1st generation SATA
150mb/s speeds
PERILOUSLY DANGEROUS WHEN SWALLOWED

SATA3.0gbps:
2nd generation SATA
300mb/s speeds
has native command queueing

What I need to know is this, my motherboard supports SATA150, if I were to buy a SATA II hd, would it be backwards compatible with my motherboard? Meaning would it operate as a SATA150 drive if I bought one anticipating a future motherboard upgrade to a SATA II compatible motherboard?

what would be the point?

sata2 would cost more $ per a gig... and you would not see a preformance boost, unless your mb has onboard sata2 support..

buying a sata2 controler card wouldnt help either... you still would be limited to the speed of your pci slot.

He said anticipating a future upgrade to a SATA2 compat. motherboard, that would be the point...

And yes, they are backwards compatible. A SATA2 drive will work on a SATA150 header @ SATA150 speeds.

The motherboard has to support both SATA II and NCQ. Some will support the faster speed, but not the NCQ. If you can get the drive for the same price (or just a couple of bucks more) then by all means, get the drive with the newer technology. If you have to pay a premium for the options then look for a good budget drive so you can upgrade your mobo in the future.

Thanks, it's kinda strange that I couldn't find information on backwards compatability.

ATM I'm looking for disks for a raid, and i'm probably settling for 80gig sata drives for 53-60 dollars.

If I spot a decent price on a SATA II drive I'll pick it up.

edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145082

sata 3.0 80gig hitachi 8mb cache 7200 rpm = 52.00
Perhaps something is wrong here. Does anyone spot something wrong with this drive or is it a good buy?

(this one's actually about 1.50 cheaper than the sata150 counterparts that I saw...)

Has anyone seen any REAL performance increase from SATA anyway? Now they come out with SATA II? Sounds like another KT333>KT400>KT400a delema!

I'm guessing I'll see a nice improvement over my ata100/ata66 drives... ugh, uninformed purchases from two years ago

I went from a 40gb 7200 maxtor ata133 to a 60gb 7200 maxtor.....no difference, maybe in a benchmark. But visually no difference. Cleaned up my case a bit! My storage drive is ata133 160gb maxtor with 8mb cache...SCREAMS!

umm well.... yeah.... they are hitachi...

alot of ppl had to rma there hdds after a couple of months....

and fyi: By factory default, this drive is locked to 150Mbyte/s. You have to use a bootable DOS tool from Hitachi site to change the transfer speed to 300Mbyte/s.
