Default Hard Drives and Linux

Alright I got this laptop, P133, with windows 98 on it. Can I take the hardrive out, Format it and install Linux on it (from another machine) and then transfer it to the laptop? Will I get Hardware Errors?

CD rom dirve dont work. I think its because windows 98 doesnt see the drivers to control it. So my only option is linux..If linux could see it then I know it would be the drivers

You shouldnt need to boot into 98 to install it, just boot to the cd. This sounds like a stupid response to what you said but from what Im getting to is that you arent booting from the cd rom, unless the cd rom is complete junk.

No the Laptop doesnt see the CD rom, or the floppy. Theres some connector thing that windows isnt seeing. The bios doesnt see it either. I was just going install Linux because it practically contains all drives

Why not due it from a USB drive such as a thumbdrive. I know a few that do that.

Most distros probe for devices at bootup...Im not going to say its going to work, but linux can be quite resilient when it comes to hardware changes. In any case, its worth a shot. What else can you do?

Edit: The most likely outcome= F****d up /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I can walk you through it in that case.

Change the CD rom...But I dont want to spend the money on a CD rom I wont use..

But I tried a floppy even, so its probably that port. Eh with linux atleast I can hook stuff up (plug and play, or even get a network card running if I need drivers)

Linux is a pretty flexible OS.. you can change kernels and shells and stuff... so I'm sure you can do it.

Windows.. on the other hand.. isn't that flexible.

Yea but then theres where knoppix comes in. Thats probably what I will install, or ubuntu. I dont like the gnome system though. I dont like how the bar is up there, but then again, it allows more programs to be open on the bottom...Its all about choice I guess..

EDIT Since we are on the subject of linux, whats the difference between Knoppix CD and the DVD version? Is the DVD version the install CD? The hardrive is only 1.3Gb...

If your /etc/X11/xorg.conf is screwed up youll have no video for sure...possibly no mouse as well. If this is the case, type as a root: Xorg -configure

edit: Knoppix only runs off the CD or the DVD. You will have to use another distro.

Go here Bro: Linuxiso.org

There is a short description of all the distros and download links to the .iso images.
I recommend Ubuntu for this situation. It just works.

Wow I just saw that your HD is 1.3GB! Yes it will fit. When prompted at the install splash screen, choose the server method. It will allow you to customize what packages are installed on your machine.
