Default DDR Question that is driving me nutz!

I have a friend that owns a P4 3.06Ghz, his mobo is Gigabyte 8INXP and is a nice board and all, but he is driving my email box nutz with stupid questions.

The mobo only supports 2100,2700 and 3200/266mhz DDR. First off he wants to sell his mobo because I have a Gigabyte GA-7AVXP and it supports 333mhz DDR.

He is asking me, and I quote:

"Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Isn't the purpose of going into a pc-2700 + ,for more speed? If the MHZ do not increase won't it preform just like PC-2100 anyway?"

Can some one help me out here as this is driving me bonkers! He keeps whining he spent all this cash on a mobo and a processor and says he only has a email machine!

Let me quote him again:

"I spent all this cash on a gaming system not a %$^&*% check your e-mail system!"

So please shed some light on my situation, is there going to be a performance notice to the normal person in the world between 266mhz and 333mhz ram, please help me quiet this man down so he can enjoy his Kick $&# machine!

Thanks

Lance

Okay... lets put it this way. Intel 3.06.... you're bottlenecking on the RAM anyway, so 3200 helps sync with the CPU FSB... Higher rating means you can overclock more stably, or run the mhz slower and run faster timings... like I'm doing with my pc2700. As for the "****ing check your email system" thing, he's just freaking out... it'll work just fine... not THE ABSO****INGLUTELY BEST COMPUTER EVER but it will be one hell of a machine, provided you paired it with a good graphics card.

Ha|2veste|2 - Let me clarify this:
PC3200 means 400MHz DDR
PC2700 means 333MHz DDR
PC2100 means 266MHz DDR
His motherboard has a Granite Bay chipset allowing a maximum DDR Operating speed of PC2100 which is 266MHz.
If he did not know this when he bought it then he must be pretty stupid to go blow $200 on a motherboard he has not even researched.

Default Thanks

I got a reply back from gigabyte and they told me it would run 3200 but would be clocked down to 266mhz, thanks for your input you two, muchly appreciated.

And Outcast he is running a Radeon9700 so ya it is a nice machine. Thanks again for the input.

Lance

He should have gone with SiS 655 because its cheaper and faster.
Does he have two sticks of ram? He should, otherwise the advantage the Granite Bay was made for is rendered useless: Dual-Channel 266MHz DDR

Stealth_Avenger: yeah, I am looking to switch to a MSI SiS655 board soon... looks nice. Just hesitant because it is a SiS chipset and they haven't been too well known for speed in the past.

I've had several SiS based motherboards in the past, they are quite nice, better then Intel and cheaper, look at the benchmarks, and look at the pricing.
8INXP (Granite bay) is $200+
8SQ800 (SiS 655) is $100
If you want benchmark linkage I'd be happy to provide

The first 2 is CAS(Column address Strobe)
RAS precharge is second
RAS to CAS Delay is third
(Ras is ROW address strobe)
Fourth is RAS to active precharge

the lower the numbers the better but on Corsair's website it says RAS active to precharge: 5 cycles for PC2700, 6 cycles for PC3200

Anyways, you have some very fast RAM there

Aboout the SiS and Intel Chipsets, would you recomend the SiS655 Gigabyte board over the P4G8X Granite Bay Asus board? Let me know I am gonna be running a 3.06 GHz P4 and Corsaid XMS Dual-Channel DDR Ram (1 GB or 2)
