Default Oh **** Whats Wrong With My Hard-drive?

When I turned off my PC this morning one of my Hard-Drives, i dunno which one, made a very very very nasty grinding sound. What the **** could this be, and what could it mean? The only thing I can think of is that the electronic brake has failed? All my Hard-Drives are working still. After hearing that sound I started my rig up and shut it down again, same exact sound. Hmmmm...............

EDIT: BTW one of my Hard-Drives is making a funny clicking sound every 30-45 seconds. Is that the Head Parking or something? I never used to have that sound it only started about 2-3 weeks ago.

Click of death
Back-up all info on said drive, and wait for it to die.

Hmmmm. I'm going towards it being my 40gig Quantum(Maxtor) or my 80gig maxtor. When its cold my 40gig Quantum(Maxtor) has one of those slow revingup sounds when its trying to start sometimes, maybe thats the culprit. Yeah I have all my drives backed up onto a 120gig Western Digital, except my two 60gig maxtors which are in RAID, but they don't matter that much because there isn't much data on them. Most of my data is on my 40 and 80gigers.

It is not uncommon for a drive to whine as it spins up.

As mentioned it sounds like one drive has the click of death. It will die sooner or later and you might start ahving problems with corrupted data.

Back up the data and get rid of taht drive.

Okay I got all my data on all my drives backed up except the data on my two 60gig maxtors that are in RAID 1 but that doesn't matter that much to me. I guess I'll just have to wait for it to die, but thats good because I have too many drives according to all you people. . Anyways thanks for telling me whats wrong with it.

Hey chiquita, you dont have to many drives. you just dont have enough power pushing them all and your overclock...hehehe. once you get your new power supply your system will rock even more.

as for the drive id try and find out if its under warrenty.

Okay I now know for a fact that its my 40GB Quantum(Maxtor) because I got one of those dredded S.M.A.R.T. warnings saying that it would fail on July 21st 2003. I checked the warrenty date and it ended last year in Novemeber.

HOLY **** DUCKY THATS THE ****ING MOTHERLOAD OF ATA DRIVES! Yeah Maverick you got it right on the bat, I am stricken for money. I am actually thinking about the 100gigers to replace it so i can also scrap my aging 12gig maxtor aswell. That way I will only then have 6 HDD's. ROFL. I'm trying to cut down people, I really am, but I can't.
