Seeing as Sk8 has another LAN party coming up I need to get my own NIC...well i dont NEED to but I want to (got a bonus check from work and gotta blow it before any has a chance to make it to my bank account and credit card)...since I only have 3 PCI slots in my HP (dont laugh)...and I already have 1 SCSI card and a modem...i was thinking about getting a USB netowrk hookup...would this be a good idea...or no...is it just like having a PCI card?

Need your opinions...either way makes no difference...

The reason I was thinking USB was that it keeps my 1 remaining PCI card open for whatever...and I only would need the NIC for the LAN parties ...and the internal card would just take up a slot 90% of the time...sound like a good idea to use the USB ones?????
Its an HP 6683, with usb 1.1 id imagine...if that makes a difference.

buy a pci card. theyre only $20

usb ethernet v1.1: 12 megabits/sec (avg retail: $39.99)
ethernet pci card: 100 megabits/sec (avg retail: $19.99 or less)

uh, u do the math doood...

I'd say go with the pci one, but it really depends on how bad you need that empty pci slot.

Do you have any other plans for it right now?

No I dont and its doubtful I will really ever need it...thow i was toying with the idea of getting a video card @ some point....but the hell with it...ill get the PCI card one....seems like the cost effective and faster choice...

I have a USB NIC, but only because I use it for troubleshooting and connecting people without NICs to broadband for updates.

I like it... but I still have actual cards in my PC. If you don't mind waiting... the USB 2 standard for the USB NIC is supposed to be around the corner... but I still couldn't give you an exact when!

Yeah the usb 2.0 NIC's would be awesome.

Anything to save an extra pci slot lol. And like DS said, a USB NIC is good to have for troubleshooting and connecting people w/o NIC's. And it's not like they take up a whole lotta space lol

Serif: lol...yeah ....they buy it now was 1.00 but i thought that was a little settp...so i bid .02 c. ....noone else wanted it so i got it for .01c...money well spent.

Dark: Well I would wait but the party is Saturday..and unless the release date is like friday...it wont do me any good But in the future if I need the slot Ill look for a 2.0 version.
