Default PSU=pOp+smoke---help please

MSI Neo2 plat
AMD64 3200+
1GB(2x512)Gskill pc4400
OCZ Modstream 520 PSU
80 gig WD ATA
200 gig Seagate SATA
ATI AIW 9800 PRO
SB Audigy

my 2 week old modstream would not power up all the way today. I pushed the power button, it flicked on and off. I fliped the switch on back of PSU off and on...pressed PWR on the front of case....SNAP...and smokey smell.

I used a different power supply(350w) only to see if my mobo would run. It does but the PWR LED is flickering now...my only PCI device, my soundcard is dead-->

The majority of my gear is under 2 months old. I need a new PSU to survey the damage properly.

Can someone tell me if the PSU has caused damage to my soundcard and mobo? I don't know which rail would power the soundcard, does anyone know? What should I look for in term of damage? I think i'm gonna be sick! all my nice new things...Help!

thank you -

Um no easy way to say this but you might be screwed.you should try each item in a different pc to see if thay work before installing together again,if you want to be safe.bad things happen when blowing powersupply, voltage spikes ect..the poping sound you heard was probably the capacitors bursting.

like it was said before me, it is really hard to tell, but you should check out the ocz website, i bet they will replace the defective psu, and might give you money for fried parts. i have a modstream 450w, and have never had any problems, and have not seen any on the net eithe, this might just be a defective cap or something, and they have a hot swap rma service, so hopefully you be back up soon

what about the reverse. What if I get a new PSU from OCZ and the mobo is damaged now and the vidcard/mem/cpu are fine and I start up the machine?

Man Cpl Rampage I hear you and i'll ask of course ... but honestly I don't think anyone at OCZ would pay for my brand new hardware being wrecked or take that ultimate responsiblity....i mean i'll have to get a new psu from them before i could even test my stuff. That could take 1 or 2 weeks with the way these RMA things are handled. Try to convince someone what happened 2 weeks from now and that my soundcard was damaged from it??...it's a dead issue. I mean I was on the OCZ forum and in the first 3 pages of PSU warranty section there were several stories exactly like mine and like 1 or 2 with replacements where it happens again. Sure i'll get a replacement psu, but what will i use it with if my gear is cooked. I can't afford to pay for new hardware again so if i cant get an rma for my mobo I'll have nothing.

The same thing happened to my mate a while ago... it fuzzed then started smoking and overloaded a other parts. The warranty on the PSU should insure your ****... unlucky, anyway...

I use a cheap, basic 400watt PSU and I never had any problems at all... it all runs cool and smooth...

I have 3 questions Fiddles...if i may...

1. Did you get a replacement from OCZ?
2. Did OCZ replace your fried parts without a sworn affidavid?
3. What parts in your rig got zapped?

Thanx man,
X

Default update...whoa! U were right Fiddles.

[QUOTE=Mr. Fiddles]The warranty on the PSU should insure your ****... QUOTE]

You were right Fiddles.

Called OCZ support today. Got Someone one the first try. Got an RMA # within 10 min. Got a new unit crosshipped out today. They said if the PSU caused damage to my new gear they will replace it, but they need to check the PSU when it gets back to them to see what happend to it.

Well...i'm impressed so far...it's sttill a lot to have to go thru but at least i'm not being ignored. In this situation I don't think I could ask for anything more. Thanks to Sean at OCZ! The tech support rulez!
