| Apex Techie Wannabe | Hi. This is my first attempt at modding. I have found and old NCR 7401 Touch Screen + integrated PC. the case has been removed but the actual screen with the inbuilt computer is in working order. I would like to be able to use the screen on another computer as the spec on the inbuilt one is ancient. I know i would have to take the system apart but i don't know where to start. the person i got the screen from says the screen connects using a serial connection. can anyone shed any light on what i need to do? cheers Steve | |

| welcome to pimprig! that touchscreen wil NEVER work with another computer, so you should just give it to me!.......j/k anyways--try looking up some schematics(spelling) on it. then compare them to whatever you want to connect to it. that would be pretty cool if you could mod it into your case itself somehow........... | ||

| just start takin it apart now, pull out that harddrive and webcam first. then see if you can seperate the mobo from he screen, don't literally rip it out but just look for screws and the such that you can take off and seperate it. also unplug any cables that you can, and make sure to take plenty of pictures. if this monitor does have a serial connection you better hope your mobo does too. most older mobos have a serial connector so i don't think you'll have a problem. what model mobo will you be using to hook this lcd up to? | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Hi. I've had the screen and computer in bits. the monitor will not accept VGA and the touch screen component cannot be used in another computer as it is customized as well. can anyone suggest any uses for the system as is? I don't mind installing a new OS or possibly upgrading components if anyone has any suggestions. I'll find out the exact spec for the system but the bits i know just now are Pentium 266 windows ME 12GB hard drive i think 64MB RAM not sure about graphics but very basic the computer has a network port a keyboard port a USB port and a couple of others I'm not sure about. Cheers S | |

| You could toss it together for a nice and simple mp3 player - touch screen mp3 player would be cool. You would use it as a terminal to control all your other PCs via VNC. Its really easy. You could toss Win98 on it and then access the other PCs, switch to full screen and it would "look" like you were running whatever OS they were (ie WinXP or OSX). Hows about putting it in a slimmer case, hanging it on the wall and making a virtual picture frame??? or Maybe put a bunch of recipes on it and set it up in the kitchen....... | ||

| Put any OS on that thing - grab a copy of VNC. There are many. I use RealVNC. http://www.realvnc.com/ Run it on both PCs, as long as they are on a network your good to go. Run one in server mode....then fire up the touchscreen, type in the IP and password and BAM.....your in. | ||
