Default SO-DIMM compatability question

I'm trying to figure out if a Dell Latitude D600 ( which came with two standard unbuffered 128MB 200-Pin DDR266 SO-DIMM's in dual-channel) would accept something faster like two 512MB DDR400 SO-DIMM's in dual-channel. I don't believe there is anything proprietary about the socket. I'm aiming to find out today. Thanks for the pimp opinions.

If they do work they would Downclock to PC2100 standards... When I tried to put PC2100 in my rig with another stick of PC3200 it freaked out and crashed on boot everytime.

EDIT: The reason it would downclock is cause your system bus for the memory is only 266mhz and those other RAM sticks would be at 400mhz so the very fastest it would go is 266mhz.

I wouldn't dare put those nasty 2100's back in after flipping the pagefile off with the 512 pc3200(s) -possibly) (but thanks for looking out for that conflict anyway!) . These are gonna be for my stepdad, and in return (for being such a helpful advisor of course) , he might get me some value OCZ Premier 512MB

Hold your horses! They're not even shipped yet (according to the order status @ newegg), but I've decided upon (and ordered) these: 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820155106 & 1x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223009 (I got the Rosewill for my system over the value OCZ because I already have a matching 512MB Rosewill module and didn't want to worry about dual-channel incompatability). I hope its here by friday, I really can't wait to see what disabling the disk-paging and enable large system cache on that laptop does for OS performance. Maybe i'll be able to play against him in some games now (without the things pausing constantly on the mobility 9000).
