Default Hard drive hell...

Well another maxtor drive was acting up so I bought a Seagate 80 gig drive to replace it. Using their software and tech help, I have a copy of my old drive, and it seems to be the boot drive, but ONLY if the old Maxtor is hooked up as a slave, otherwise I get a insert system disk error.

I have tried CS, Master... all the jumper settings I can think of, but it still only boots if the Maxtor drive is on as a slave. I even tried re- installing XP, same thing, Win ME same error...

Seagate has been very prompt with their tech help, but none of their solutions have worked. Unless any of you have any ideas, I am going to take the drive back, get a gas grill, and pray the Maxtor keeps on working while I get my grill on!

Thanks for your time

I would just do a fresh install on the new hard drive..........hook the old one up as slave and pull all your important files off the old to the new one.....

Like Highperf said. Just make sure when you do a format and install you don't have the old drive hooked up. Connect it after you have windows up and running.

Yeah.........definitely unhook the old one first.........after the fresh install on the new HD......just hook it back up.....pull all your files.........then you can just format the old one for file storage........

Default Thanks

I was trying to avoid reinstalling windows, but it looks like it is the only way this will work.
