| I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 v.4 wireless router (802.11B). The wireless function seems to work fine, but I often lose the internet connection on any computer hard-wired into it. The only fix I've found is to unplug the router and plug it back in. The loss of connection is intermittent, and it can go from a few minutes to days without dropping. I've done a lot of web searching (nothing has worked), and contaced Linksys (hah! Didn't even hear back), and I'm still stuck. I know it's the router because if I replace it with a Linksys WRT54G everything runs fine. I should probably also mention that occasionally when I am doing this fast unplug/replug, I see a flash out of the back of the router ![]() Ok, so if anyone has a fix, that would be fantastic. If it's unfixable (which I'm starting to think is the case), then I think I will keep it around for the wireless function and get a new (non-wireless) router for my hard-wired comps. I'll run the wireless router off of that one and set it as a dumb switch, just to keep my wife happy with her laptop. If I get another router, I want one with a lot of ports, since I host LAN parties pretty frequently. Any recommendations on a good router with a 7 or 8 port switch? | ||

| My brother has the Linksys WRT54G, and he says it has the exact same problem (intermittently drops wired connections). Wish we had a good fix for you, but after fiddling with it he says it's defective so he's planning on getting a new one. I guess the only suggestion I'd make is to see if it has the latest firmware and upgrade if possible (http://www.linksys.com/download/). | ||

| .theres a section on your linksys router settings that let you change your dhcp settings--the default "scope" is only supports 4. but you can hardcode dhcp adresses so it can support more..I.E 192.168.1.101,102 103, and so on.......i did this and i can support as many dhcp adresses as my router/switch can hold..... | ||

| If its is within a year old you can rma it. Contact their tech support tell them the problem rma it. They will probably bitch about it if you dont have the reciept. They will replace your router once if you do not have the original receipt. I will never buy a linksys product again. | ||

Ok first of the problem isnt with the WRT54G i have that router to and IMO its a piece of sh!t. He says in the first line that its a problem with the router. He also said he had updated the latest firmware for it. Thats why i recommended RMAing it. He also says in the post using the WRT54G the problem goes away. //End Rant | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| hehe thanks for that Cpt. Planet. You're right, I can drop in a WRT54G and everything is good. I'm sure the router is just a pile. It's over a year old, though, so I'm screwed as far as returning it. Like I said, it works fine as a WAP, just not for wired comps. I'll keep it around for laptop connectivity, and try and find a good 8-port router for my wired computer/LAN parties. Like I said in my original post, does anyone have a recommendation for a good company/router? | ||

| I also have the problem of losing the internet but i only have 2 computers connected to the cable modem and router. My router is not wireless either. Ive followed all instructions from linksys and microsoft that i could find and got nowhere. I know that my problem is not SP2 because the host computer in my house for the connection does not have it. | ||
