Default Building your own

This is what it is:
Antec case with side door viewer and tri colored fan
Enermax power supply 400watts
Pentium 4 processor 3.06
ASUS P4T/533/R motheboard
512 Rambus memory
ATI All in Wonder 9700 Pro
two 40 GB Western Digtal hard drives in RAID array from mother board connectors.
Sound: C-Media from the motherboard
Sony DVD CDOM
Samsung Combo DVS/CDROM/CD/RW
Four tricolor fans.

My first motherboard was defective.........I am getting another and waiting patiently.
My problem is this: How do I get the goop off the processor and heatsink when I remount them into the new motherboard? Also, what do you think of this motherboard that is no longer in the inventory of the manufacturer?
This is my first rig...........Ambitious,? Routine?, Yawn?

That's not too bad as far as hardware goes, but it's sounding a little yawn so far. What are you planning on doing with that case? I hope something, it seems everybody and their dog has one of those Antec cases, and honestly I don't think they look that nice. Never was a fan of the tri-colored fans, either.

As far as getting off the thermal goop, I just used a napkin and made sure I got it all, then reapplied some artic silver. As far as the mobo, I don't really keep track of Intel stuff, but somebody'll be able to give you a good opinion.

Oh yeah, and welcome to PR. ~

I have the older P4T and it rocks. Nice and stable, but if they can't replace that mobo, you should look into the P4G8X Deluxe. Made by Asus also, this is top of the line when it comes to P4 3Ghz+ motherboards.

Thank you for that warm welcome. I just want enough electronics to play the next Tombraider, and wanted to build my own ever since my subscription to MAXXIMUM PC ran out .
The only thing I want to do with the case is wipe the dust off it about once a month.
The stress produced by trying to install a $600.00 processor is right on par with your first parachute jump into a rain forest a 2:00AM.
When I found out I had a defective board that needed replaced, and that I need to remove the processor and store it in a house full of cats, I almost eveloped a strong urge to evacuate.
You veteran computer makers probably drop processors in frying bacon and make them work without sweating, but I have to smoke about four bowls of Jack Herer before I can calm down.
I get my new replaced motherboard on Monday, and who knows, maybe chapter two will have a happy ending and I can tell you about it.

Hgoale,
Hi there and thank you for your response. I'm familiar with P4G8X, and I sure gave it a consideration, but said no because it wouldn't take the 1066 32bit 512 Rambus memory I had already budgeted and paid for. My motherboard came from Multiwave Technology "ASUS P4T533/R INTEL 850E CHIPSET ULTRA ATA133", and I can't find it in the inventory of motherboard as ASUS.com. and search tells me it can't be found.......
The R stands for on board RAID controller I think. At any rate, why would the manufacturer take this board off his web site? Is he afraid to acknowledge it? My board was defective. Windows XP could not or would not recognize my hard drives attached to the RAID controller........After a question answer session with a tech at Mwave, he told me I the board was bad. It makes me wonder if this is the 1500th board that is defective not the first from a respectable manufacturer and makes me wonder about the replacement.

As for the thermal goop , you dont want to use a napkin llittle.

When you are cleaning off the thermal goop you want to use a lint-free cloth, like a lense cleaning cloth, or even a coffee filter.

Use some 99% Isopropyle Alchool to remove any remaining thermal good on the processor die and heatsink ( basicly rubbing alchool.)

If you got some really tough stuff stuck on the heatsink, use some Goof-Off

And welcome to Pimprig!

Thank your your advice.............I have 70% alcohol used in hospitals, but to get 99% I would think I would have to try 190 proof vodka or gin. Ordinary High School Pharmacy doesn't carry 99% alcohol.
Where is your source of 99% alcohol?
The stuff I have on mine is fresh. I have an application for the new insertion. I just didn't want to destroy the integrity of what ever it is I am going to put on there the next time.
I won't make an attempt to clean the processor while it is in the Intel carrying case............I will wait until it is on the motherboard and then use a lens cleaning cloth with 99% alcohole when I get some. Thank you very much for your help. It does wonders for my stress level, and I appreciate your welcome.

70% alcaholl should work pretty fine, the only reason i recommend 99 is it leaves less residue. But 70 will work fine, 99% is sold just about anywhere.

Yeah listen to goat, you're better off taking his advice over mine. And good luck with the new mobo, defective hardware is always a pain in the ass.

Is that "Old Goat"?
I called by brother and asked his advice for removing the goop and he told me I should pick up the processor from the pin side with duct tape and hold it ever so closely over a rapid spinning Porter/Cable belt sander and then just lower it a tad, and be careful not to over do it.
Says it works everytime.

What do you mean know better!?

40 grit sandpaper works fine! Not only do you clean off the core but you lapp it to a mirror finish at the same time!!

Scapegoat!
Thank you for that splendid pictorial, demonstrating that the lowly Black and Decker can work just as well as the high and mighty Porter/Cable. It is wonderful to be able to communicate with such learned individuals as yourselves who pour their heart and soul into giving advice to tyros like myself.
You are so much better than telephone tech help......Anyone call tech help lately? It will always be somebody who doesn't speak our language, stutters while reading the computer screen, and says its Microsoft's fault, call them.

Here is what you can work on.........I will be launching Windows XP professional to assist me in getting my computer to run.
I will be connecting to a Promise Raid Controller on the motherboard. I will be using two Western Digital hard drives each with their own cable and having no jumpers.

Who can walk me through the RAID setup using the ASUS P4T/533/R motherboard? I will be ready to reload the motherboard Monday, and I need time to digest your advice.

Download the drivers from the card's web site, and as Monkey said, press F6 when it asks. You will be asked to install a floppy with the drivers, after they load the rest is as usual.
