Default psu makes weird noise

my mom has an old dell that came with a weak 85w psu. she needs more hard disk space so she bought a 300w psu. i installed it, and i noticed that this dell motherboard has two power connectors. one is the normal connector which is like 2 1/2 inches long (dont know proper name) and there is another one that is like an inch long, and it looks more old school. the new psu my mom bought doesnt have this old school connector. is it needed?

as soon as i pluged everything in (except the old school plug) and turned it on, i got a very high pitched ear peircing noise... like that from an old TV, only worse... and the computer wont turn on...

my memory is a bit shady about this, but it sounds to me like you got your hands on an older dell that was very proprietary...

and if memory serves me correctly, those older dells would die on the spot if a standard ATX psu was used in lieu of the proprietary dell part...

i could be wrong, but i know i have heard of this exact same thing before....

Yeh Ive serviced dells and had that noise...I belive you talking about the small power connector which attaches to the motherboard...for the others out there, its exactly the same to an old AT power connector, along with an ATX connector (similar sort of process as the ATX12 connector). You need that connector mate, and its only usually left out if the dell is set up in a certain way from the factory. A lot of PSUs do have it, but if you buy the cheap kind, you wont find it. Need to find a PSU with a range of connectors apart form the ATX and standard molexes.

For Saftey, do not turn the machine on to spare the power drain.
