Default Maxtor 160gb (Model: 6y160p0) failed :(

Guys:

Have any of you had any problems with this drive (Maxtor 160gb, Model: 6y160p0)? Mine failed this weekend, for no reason at all. The BIOS sees it, and XP pro sees it, but XP does not see anything on the drive (that thing was 100gb full of family pics, downloads, and music). I still need to do some more troubleshooting to see if I can even get anything off of there before handing it off to my forensics guy, but i just wanted to see if anyone here knew of any problems with this, or other Maxtor HDs, or their Diamond Max line.If so, any recommendations for a new drive would be nice.

Thank in advance

Was it you I bought one of these drives from? ...Think it was, but I don't remember. It was a couple years back.

Regardless, mine works still. It started clicking for awhile, but it's back. I just don't keep anything important on it.

Nope; i bought mine from Office Depot, it was their last one during a killer sale (at the time)..

Edit: Maxtor's PowerMax did not see any problems with it..Guess it's time to break out my emergency boot cd..

Edit #2: Called Maxtor to see about RMA (after data was restored) and they said it was out of warranty

So, it looks like it's time for a replacement, until i can get this one fixed/restored..give me your recommendations for a new drive (or drives, cuz i might do RAID now)..i have been happy with maxtor up to this point, and wouldn't mind buying another one (like this one from NewEgg (i like the 5 yr warranty and 1million MTTF)) unless you guys can recommend something else..

well, my forensics guy is going to recover everything for me, all i have to do is provide him a larger HD. I went ahead and purchased the drive linked above, and it should be here in a few days..My question now is, once i get the data to that drive and get it loaded up into windows, how hard would it be, once i purchase a second identical drive, to make a RAID-0, since the data is already on 1 of the drives..Do you have to start with a clean drive when setting up a RAID??

do you mean raid 1? thats the mirrored one. where both drive have the same exact thing on them.

raid 0 id striped.....it splits the data between the drives. and yes--i do belive you have to start with a clean install....but i may be wrong........

Yes, i meant 1, sorry..

so, for a mirror, (raid-1) you cannot have data on 1 drive, and have a blank one that it will copy everything to??

i belive so--you have to make the array before you can even put anything on it. i think raid 5 is the one that you can add a harddrive to and it says "hello, welcome to our party--have some info!" --and copies everything by itself

And this my friends is why I have a fileserver and backups every month.

I had the exact same incident happen for no apparent reason on a 40gb DiamondMax. Try changing the controller board, find a HDD with the same board and swap it out. If you have to buy another harddrive. This is data we are talking about here.

well, the good news: The guy i used for recovery got 100% of the data off of the bad HD..

the, uh, err, bad news: the new 250gb hard drive won't format poperly..it formats as a 2 terabyte drive (not usable though)..he is going to keep playing around with it, but i may have to get a new one from maxtor, we'll see; i'll update y'all..

the great news: lookie what i scored from a guy at work!!:

how about this for a backup solution j-dogg Cost all of $30 for the drive, 20+ tapes, the scsi controller card, cables, and a copy of Veritas Backup Exec 9

(i got more than a dozen more tapes, but this is a great start)

Well, some bad news:
Even though my guy was able to recover all the data from the bad HD, it was only bits that he could recover..He told me he recovered 42 x 4gb segments that are just sequential bits; no algorithm, no organization, nothing, just bits..Soooo, he recommended drivesavers.com, but they want $1200-$2000 to restore the data..I am trying one last ditch effort of mirroring the drive to another drive (the 250gb stated above) to see if it just mirrors crap, or if it actually mirrors data and shows it in an OS..wish me luck..PS: the tape drive is working splendidly..

Well, GREAT NEWS:
The RAID copied all the data fine from the failed 160gb to the new 250gb (on a 160gb partition); although, none of it was viewable through any OS. However, i was able to use GetDataBack for NTFS by Runtime and I could see everything on the 160gb partion of and I am currently restoring all of it as we speak
You guy's don't know how happy I am to get this stuff back. It's about 10yr's worth of data that I've accumulated, and just never gotten around to affording a backup solution. This one hit home, so I will do whatever it takes to have as many backups of this data as possible. I'll have at least one RAID-1 drive now, more in the future, as well as media backups (the new tape drive and DVD backups as well)..
