Wink My computer's funny spot. WTF!?

If you've seen my other thread, you know that my computer has a funny spot. I thought I'd create a fresh thread because we've narrowed it down and proved that the video driver wasn't the problem.

So what is a funny spot? It's something that I hit to cause my computer to screw up. The computer in my sig, to be exact. So what hits this funny spot? The first time, I installed Windows XP and the motherboard drivers fine, but when I went to install the omega drivers for my video card I hit the funny spot. The only way I could get my computer to post afterwards was to reset the BIOS. After I did that, I formatted and re-installed XP. Then I installed the motherboard drivers without incident, but then I installed SP2 and when it was done I hit the funny spot again. Another BIOS clear, I guess.

What I hit the funny spot the monitor loses it's signal and the hard drive light stays on. When I reset it with the power or reset buttons, the same thing happens. So what causes this crap? Is it a bad motherboard, hard drive or SATA driver? And if I can't get it working under XP, is there a way to install Windows 98 SE on a SATA hard drive?

Thanks so much.

Funny spot as in Keyboard or on the Case?

If it is OS, then I'd suggest KillDiscing your harddrive.

By "funny spot" I mean something that I do in XP that makes it die. It's not a keyboard/case issue.

Killdisc only workes on IDE hard drives. No SATA compatibility (I think?)

Do you have the latest BIOS? Have you tried to "roll back" the BIOS to an earlier version?

I drop a line to Asus and ask if what kind of issues they've had with this mobo.

I had similiar problems with the Omega drivers in where I would load them, restart the computer, and it would hang with no video output. Once I restarted it, it would load up 800x600 with 16 colors. I'd reinstall the video drivers again, and back to the begining of this paragraph. The only thing that saved me from a meltdown was to do an entire rebuild from scratch.

Have you tried loading SP2 and then the Omega video drivers? I'd give that a shot if I were you.

I must have missed the part where you said you installed SP2 before you installed the video drivers....can you kindly point it out for me?

....sorry. I lash out way too easily.

I installed linux and it works perfectly. I think Windows XP just hates this rig. I wonder if I could install 98 SE on a SATA disk.....as far as I can tell, you need to install it on an ATA drive first, and then install the SATA driver once you get that up and running.
