| I don't know how many of you have read my posts about my troubles with my new rig, but you might want to read these so you know what I'm going through: http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread....&threadid=3160 http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread....&threadid=2815 http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread....&threadid=3493 Ok, now that you feel my pain, maybe you can tell me why my power supply just burned up. Every time I had to unplug or turn off my power supply, switching it back on then trying to power up my PC was time consuming. I had to let it "warm up". I've got a baybus and the LEDs would flicker quicker and quicker until it finally turned on. After that I didn't really have any more problems with my fans or anything just the things in those other forums. But the other day I had to unplug my PS (don't remember what for now) and when I plugged it back in I waited as usual. But this time I waited about a min to see if it would turn on and it didn't, and since I had someone over I had to leave the room (which was a mistake). About 5 min later I came back and it still wasn't on. I smelled the PS burning (no smoke or anything, just smell) so I shut it off and removed the PS and sure enough it was where the smell was coming from. I burned a PS before and it was the same thing I smelled before so I has to be the PS. My question is, why did this happen? Also could it have screwed up anything else? I had a 420 generic PS which was P4 ready and about 100 bucks. My other specs are in my signature. BTW - I am getting another 430w power supply, this time from Enermax. | ||

| Ok Fredstar, this is what it looks like to me. First, I would bet that your PSU wasn't up to the job even before your re-did the wiring on it. Second, I would bet that you also did something wrong when you cut and shortened the wiring. Your other problems were probably mostly related to this bad PSU. You may have known this, and maybe you didn't mess up the wiring at all, but each one of those wiring leads can only supply so much juice. If you rewired them and let's say, wired in three 4-Pin Molex connectors to a lead that was only rated for two, then connected say three drives to it. I can see how that would cause big problems at boot up, (when all devices are comming on-line during system post), and where they could draw more amperage then the guage of the wiring could handle, or just burn something else up in the PSU. With any luck, the only real damage will be the PSU. Go get yourself an Antec or Enermax and shoot for a 450 watt or better for all your gear. Another possibility is that the Fan Bus was messing with it as well, compounding the problem, rheostats can do funny things sometimes. | ||

| Well, from an electronics perspective, if the lights on your Baybus are flickering faster and faster, then that could indicate the switching regulators in your power supply have gone into self-oscillation. Typically there's all kind of filtering circuitry to ensure that never happens, but...if there's a short somewhere, or some load is pulling way more than it can handle, I could see something like this happening. | ||

| OK, just put in new PS and nothing!! I checked everything and still nothing. Then when I tried again and again one time I seen a white flash come from it (very small). I'm hoping it was the LED that's in there. Well I'm forced to tear down my case, and my buy a new one, anyone want my FX case? | ||

| Thanks putwig, I'll figure it out later this week then. BTW, before you buy a clear (or colored) cover for PS, make sure it fits. I wasted money and had to yank an old cover off so it'll fit! But then again, I do have an old case because I didn't want to cut up and paint a newer case (BIG BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE!!!). | ||
