Default IDE cable mod

I was wondering of a way to reduce the amount of space the round IDE cable take up. One of the things i was thinking about was to take the exterior of the cable off so that the individual 40 wires are showing and then wrap those wires tighter with electrical tape. I would do this so that, hopefully, they would become more manageable and not be as thick. Would this work at all? or would this cause problems without the exterior to the cord?

One thing to consider, would be how thick is the tape?
Odds are, that when you have the 40 wires all taped up, the end result would be thicker...maybe.

Yes, taking the plastic insulation off will shorten the wires and may destroy your hdd and mobo (and more). Unless you wrap every wire, but that will definately be thicker!

if u do that they wont be as flexible

so ur best bet is to remote the casing on it, and jsut secure them with few zip ties...or use that chineese finger trap stuff

Just get a longer cable and run it out of the way of everyhitng so that there will be no chance of airflow restriction im assuming thats what your worrying about is airflow. They do sell those new IDE cables that are more aero dynamic, if thats somthign you might like

Your idea is fine, but spiral wrap or nylon cable sleeving would be preferable to electrical tape by a long shot.

alright, i took off the big plastic ends, they weren't necessary and i will post pics as soon as i can, and that made the cable much more flexible. So i don't need to take anything else off, and i wont since it wouldn't help.

Thank you ClowN that's very nice of you. I thought he meant a flat cable, I apparently read a bit too fast.

well tape can get a little stiff and for the idea of heat shrink dont know about that either seems like when that stuff shrinks get gets really hard ..if you went back to flat cables i cut mine and then when i went back to taping em i just split the difference and wrapped 2 strands instaed of of all taped together.

I prefer flat cables now. Round ones can't be hidden or run under mobo's.

But your camera doesn't work. Are you going to draw it and scan it in?
