| Yeah they released um. But you probably wont see um in stores till next month. They are going to be Serial ATA also and from what I heard they will be on the expesive side. A 36 gig drive is going to start around 150. The reason for it being 36 gig is that is how much space per platter they will have. | ||

| According to their press release on 2/10, the first 10K Serial ATA "Raptor" drives will be 36.7GB, costing "30% less" than the business servers' SCSI drives they're aimed at replacing. Given that 36.7GB, 10Krpm SCSI drives can go for $150-$200 (and more), my SWAG (Stupid Wild-@$$ Guess) is that these'll be around $150 at most places. My hope is that they'll be closer to $100-$120 at some. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere yet either. But good news for us is that, "Western Digital, having no SCSI business to protect, is sure to be aggressive in both pricing and distribution to gain significant market acceptance quickly", according to a news blurb at Tom's Hardware. | ||

| There are a couple stories on it in Tom's Storage Guide. There's an overview in one of his earlier stories on Serial ATA, including his basic rundown of the new features:

| Yes there are adapters for using the new cable with an old disk (7-pin to 40 pin) as well as using a new disk with an "old" PSU (4-pin power to 15-pin (!!) power). Link: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?a...&GrpID=11&s=pl | ||

| Hey this is way off topic but i was wondering if I can take the outside off of my IDE cables? Not so that its bare wire, but i have round cables and there is this sheath around the wire, and i was wondering if you could take that off so the wire would be more manageable. Would that create a lot of interference if i did that? or would the cable still be as hard to manage and hide as is it right now. If i can find a digital camera i will take pics and point to what i am talking about later. | ||

| Not me Tom, My primary rig has an array of 9.1 gig SCSI drives in RAID0 in it that I use to load all my apps. You wouldnt believe how fast I zone in Everquest makes pvp fun as hell heh, but i do have a couple of 80 gigger ide drives that I use for file storage, so large capacity drives are useful, i just happen to consider ide drives disposable throwaways since they never seem to last very long | ||

| I guess i just punish my drives a lot, and yeah Ive had some really good drives that have lasted a long time, but I'd say 65% of my ide drives (with the exception of anything quantum built) die within the first 18 months if its an IBM hard drive, its dead in 6 months =P Also you have to keep in mind that I dont backup data on cds, I use removeable drive bays so i'm constantly swapping out drives, which can put a lot of wear and tear on a drive after extended periods. SCSI drives stand up to the abuse SO much better | ||
