| I currently have a 20 gig maxtor and 80 gig seagate. The 20 gig is the boot drive and the 80 gig is where i try to put everything else. The 80 gig seagates have gone on sale again and i was thinking about buying another one because i eventually want to have a raid setup. My mobo (soyo kt333 plat) has on board raid. 1)Can i put this hard drive into my computer to replace the current 20 gig i have now with losing any information or having to reformat or anything like that?? 2)Once i have this second drive in their can i set up a raid system? | ||

| Yes and no. If you want to go raid, usually you need to reformat and reload. I have had pretty good success making an image of a drive and reloading it to a raid array, but there is no guarantee. It is easy to migrate data to a new drive from an old drive, most hard drive manufacturers have free utilities that accomplish this. | ||

| so just to make sure i am on the same page here, i can replace the 20 gig with a new 80 gig and have the 80 gig in the master slot on the IDE cable that the 20 gig is on now? So literally putting it into the same slot the 20 gig is in. The reason i am asking is i don't have a lot of room in my case to add another IDE cable, it would be pushing up against my vid card big time and would just flat out get in the way over every other pci card i have. I am just wondering cause if i can't do it that then i will just reformat and go raid. | ||
