Argh...this is irritatin me...I have 64 Megs of ram..PC 100...I read my motherboard only supports up to 256Megs...ok...I get 2 128 Meg sticks of supposedly backward compatable PC 133 ram...put it in...i get the Hp screen for about 3 seconds then nothing...black screen. If I put in the 512 Megs stick I got from SK8 I get one beep followed by 4 beeps...it does that a few times then nothing...WTF...is all this casue i need straight PC100 ram or what??

Keef, there are a lot of different types of RAM modules.

Help us out please.

We need the Manufacturer and Model #s then we can hunt down the details. Need your Mobo info as well so we know what it can take, and maybe can DL your manual and read it also.
Love to help you, but we're shooting blind until we know some of this info.

Well as for specifics...um...Im not sure 'bout the mobo numbers but its an HP Pavillion 6683...i went to HP's website to get the specifics...type in the model number and product specifications. Thats how I got I had a 100MHZ buss with the 256Megs limit....If there is a place I can look to get the mobo number more specifically let me know and Ill look.

Sounds like your problem is that its an HP . ROFL. JK, um what version of windows are you running? Win 98 and ME only support up to 512mb I believe. Also, try one 128 stick at a time and see if that works

i bought some ram once, went to put it in same problem. So i went back to the store they said beeps mean it aint plugged in right. So i went back home pushed it in all the way (which was harder then expected) and bingo it werks, so mebbe you're just not gettin it in the slots fully.

Keef.. if you are gunna stick with the hardware thing.. it may be a good idea to invest in a POST card. It will tell you what those beeps mean.
you can get one at www.micro2000.com

SK8...yeah it didnt work, but like I said Brian may want it...unless you want it back...did U find the SCSI card..ill pay U for it?? And yeah Ill get that chart...hardware is pretty cool s**t so im not gonna be getting out of it anytime soon

Luck: Its pushed in all the way...and yeah its hella hard.

Clown: Is a 533 Celeron (the one in my sig) Running windows XP Pro...not that bad either...I just want more MEMORY hehehe.

Chiquita: Yeah laugh it up...i do...not too expandable with only 3 pci slots, ones got my modem, one has my SCSI card for my Zip drive...and the other will probably have a video card pretty soon if SK8 keeps on me to get one
I tried one at a time and got the same result..it flashed the HP screen for about 3 seconds then nothing.

But i dont know...maybe ill try just striaght PC 100 ram huh?
N E other ideas?

Thanks for the help so far

UPDATE: Well nothings really changed....ive just always wanted to say that...pretty pathetic life long goal huh??
Anyway I got into BIOS and got rid of the useless HP boot screen...now I can see the processor speed, ram test etc...but when I stick in my PC133 ram it locks up after it tests the initial 64 megs?? Argh...someone even suggested I pull the battery for a few minutes and try to boot again...nothing....so...i think im gonna take this ram...tie it to a rock...and throw it through the windshield of SK8's g-ride...lol.

Anyway whats up with all this?? What am i doing wrong...the guy said he'd call HP to find out if the ram is incompatable but what a pain this is...hp can lick....well....ya know

Later,
KeeflA (a bit disgruntled @ the moment puttering away on XP pro w/64 megs of ram)

Keef, without make and model #s on that stuff it could be anything.

It might be mixed ECC / Non-ECC, might require different voltages, may be a lot of different things. But there should be some clue on each of those RAM modules that will help you figure out what they are.

Without that, we can't really help you except to say, experiment, try each one seperately, swap where you put them, etc.

But the real truth is that different makes of RAM do not always play well together.

Sorry.
